Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Okay, with question 1 let's lay some ground work for those of you who are not SUPER-Stygians: FIRST INCARNATION refers to 1972-1975. 1972 is when TW4 became Styx; 1975 is when John Curulewski left and was replaced by Tommy Shaw. SECOND INCARNATION refers to 1975-1999. During this time Shaw was breifly replaced by Glen Burtnik and John Panozzo passed on. Panozzo was replaced by Todd Sucherman. The second incarnation would not end, however, until the departure of Dennis DeYoung and Chuck Panozzo changing his status to part-time in 1999. THIRD INCARNATION refers to the period that began in 1999 with the addition of Lawrence Gowan, and the reinduction of Glen Burtnik to the group. Now that we've laid the ground work, let's start off easy! To which incarnation does the album "Paradise Theatre" belong?

Answer: Second Incarnation

If you missed that one you could be in trouble! "Paradise Theatre" was released in 1981 at the height of the band's glory. It is the only Styx album to reach #1 on the American charts. It was also the #1 album in the world at the time.
2. To which incarnation does "Brave New World" belong?

Answer: It depends on if you are talking about the tour or the album

The album was by the second incarnation, but DeYoung and C. Panozzo were left off the tour replaced by Gowan and Burtnik, respectively. The tour was, therefore, the beginning of the third incarnation of Styx.
3. To which incarnation(s) does John Curulewski belong?

Answer: First Incarnation

It was Curulewski's departure that brought the first incarnation to a close at the beginning of the A&M years.
4. To which incarnation(s) does James Young belong?

Answer: All Three

JY is the only Stygian to perform on every track of every album from "Styx" to "Cyclorama". This has helped earn him the title "The Godfather Of Styx".
5. To which incarnation(s) does Dennis DeYoung belong?

Answer: First and Second Incarnations

DeYoung was a founding member of the Tradewinds, which became Styx. His departure marks the end of the second incarnation.
6. To which incarnation does Marvin Aday belong?

Answer: None

Marvin Lee Aday is better known as Meat Loaf and, as you have probably surmised, he was never a member of Styx!
7. Which incarnation are the following lyrics from? "Open skies, fertile ground; This was Heaven on Earth that they found".

Answer: Third Incarnation

From "Fields Of The Brave", off the 2003 "Cyclorama" album.
8. Okay, here's an easy one! Which incarnation are these lyrics from? "Domo Arigato..."

Answer: Second Incarnation

"...Mr. Roboto!" From 1983's "Kilroy Was Here" album.
9. Want more lyrics? Try this one! "Lady, when you're with me I'm smiling". Taking into account released studio recordings, to which incarnation(s) do these lyrics belong? Think VERY HARD before you answer this one!

Answer: First and Second Incarnation

Don't be mad if you missed this question. I did everything but write "TRICK QUESTION" when I asked it! Okay, need an explaination? There are TWO original studio tracks by Styx with identical words and nearly identical music. They are "Lady" (recorded in 1973 by Panozzo, Panozzo, Young, DeYoung, and Curulewski) and "Lady '95" (recorded by Panozzo, Panozzo, Young, DeYoung, and Shaw). BOTH incarnations recorded original studio versions of this song.
10. The Album "Best Of Styx", released in 1977, featured which incarnation(s)?

Answer: First Incarnation

Although it was released the same year as "Grand Illusion" during the second incarnation, "Best Of Styx" only features songs from the group's first four albums.
11. Although they were released in the same year, "The Grand Illusion" and "Best Of Styx" are from different incarnations.

Answer: True

Released in 1977, "The Grand Illusion" was a release of new studio material, while the "Best Of Styx" was a compilation of Wooden Nickel material from the original Stygian line-up.
12. To which incarnation(s) do Todd Sucherman and Glen Burtnik belong?

Answer: Second and Third Incarnation

Glen relplaced Tommy Shaw for a time during the second incarnation. Todd was brought in to temporarily replace an ailing John Panozzo in 1996, but Panozzo's death made Sucherman's position permanent. At the onset of the third incarnation, Sucherman was still on drums, and Burtnik was asked to rejoin the group and permanently replace an ailing Chuck Panozzo as a full-time member.
13. Lawrence Gowan is the only member of the third incarnation of Styx that does not belong to any other incarnation.

Answer: False

Chuck Panozzo and James Young appeared in all three incarnations, while Tommy Shaw, Glen Burtnik, and Todd Sucherman were also present for the second incarnation.

UPDATE: Since Ricky Phillips is now a member of Styx, There are two. The correct answer to this question was originally "True"

Thanks Bobmber1013 for pointing this out!
14. Chuck and John Panozzo are both from the same incarnations of Styx.

Answer: False

Co-founder John Panozzo died during the second incarnation, while co-founder Chuck Panozzo belongs to all three.
15. To which incarnation does "Edge Of The Century" belong?

Answer: Second Incarnation

Although there was a line-up change, it was considered to be temporary. Indeed, this did prove to be the case. Regardless, both the tour and album were done with the Young, DeYoung, Panozzo, Panozzo, Burtnik line-up in the second incarnation.
16. Tommy Shaw appeared in the second and third incarnations, but not the first.

Answer: True

Shaw replaced Curulewski. Normally the loss of one of two lead guitar players who only does lead vocals part-time would not create a whole new era in a band's history. But Shaw brought so much to the band that lent to the huge success of the late '70s and early '80s that his mark upon the band is unquestionable. Can you imagine a Styx without such classics as "Crystal Ball", "Blue Collar Man", "Too Much Time On My Hands", or "Fooling Yourself"? Shaw was the perfect addition that gelled the Styx Prog Rock/Arena Rock style and moved them away from dabbling in the tired Psychadellic Rock of the late '60s and early '70s.

Indeed, it is safe to say that, without Shaw's contributions, the bands first two triple-platinum albums, "Grand Illusion" and "Pieces Of Eight", may never have reached such a lofty status.
17. Which incarnation are these lyrics from? "...there's a chance for the daring young soul, who's finally learned to say 'no'".

Answer: Second Incarnation

"Haven't We Been Here Before", from 1983's "Kilroy" album.
18. More lyrics: "I was afraid of things that I can't see; I can't see love but I like it a lot".

Answer: This is not a Styx song

It is from 1979, but it's not from "Cornerstone". This lyric is from "Believe In The Supernatural", off Air Supply's "Life Support" album.
19. The albums "Man Of Miracles" and "Equinox" are from which incarnation?

Answer: First Incarnation

This on can be tricky because "Equinox" marks the beginning of the A&M years, and many of us rightly associate the A&M years with Tommy Shaw and the Wooden Nickel Years with John Curulewski. However, "Equinox" was the last studio album the original Stygian line-up produced so, despite the new record label, it belongs to the first incarnation.
20. What is the first studio album the third incarnation of Styx released?

Answer: Cyclorama

It took four years, but after some live releases we finally got "Cyclorama".
21. Is "Arch Allies" the first album the third incarnation of Styx released?

Answer: Yes

It was released in 2000, and featured REO Speedwagon, who co-headlined the tour with Styx.
22. Which, of the following songs, belongs to the third incarnation?

Answer: "These Are The Times"

The other three are all second incarnation songs.
23. Which, of the following songs, belongs to the first incarnation?

Answer: "A Day"

"Sing For The Day" and "All In A Day's Work" are second incarnation. "Bastille Day" is a Rush song which Styx has never covered.
24. Which, of the following, is NOT from the second incarnation of Styx?

Answer: "Waiting For Our Time"

If you own a copy of "Cylcorama" that one was probably pretty easy. "First Time" and "Borrowed Time" are both from the 1979 "Cornerstone" album. "While There's Still Time" appears on 1999's "Brave New World", the last release from the second incarnation.
25. Ah, True or False to end it! Nice and easy (maybe): There are only three Stygians that only appear in one incarnation.

Answer: True

ORIGINAL CORRECT ANSWER: There are only two: John Curulewski - 1st. Lawrence Gowan - 3rd. Dennis DeYoung - 1,2. John Panozzo 1,2. Tommy Shaw - 2,3. Glen Burtnik - 2,3. Todd Sucherman 2,3. Chuck Panozzo 1,2,3. James Young 1,2,3.

UPDATED ANSWER: With the addition of Ricky Phillips to the Third Incarnation, there are now 3.
