Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 2009's "Down" is the title of the song, so it certainly fits the bill of this quiz. It was a smash worldwide and was the first Billboard Number One hit in America for an artist of South Asian origin. Including a rap by Lil Wayne, "Down" is by what solo artist?

Answer: Jay Sean

Jay Sean has collaborated with all three of the other artists but he is the singer in question. He followed "Down" with another worldwide hit, "Do You Remember?" He has seen more success in Britain and other countries than he has had in the US.
2. "Down On the Corner" was a top five American hit back in 1969, featuring the tale of the fictional group Willy and the Poor Boys. Who was the very real group that sang it?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival never had a number one hit in the United States but got close so many times. They reached the top of the charts in other countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada and Great Britain). While very prolific (they had three top ten albums in one year) and successful, the group had many issues internally and with their label.

They broke up in 1972. "Down On the Corner" has been covered numerous times and is featured on a Walgreens commercial campaign.
3. "Upside Down" was a 1980 disco hit that revamped the career of what Motown singer?

Answer: Diana Ross

"Upside Down" is one of six American Number One hits for Diana Ross. It marked the start of a mini-comeback for Ross, as her chart domination had waned the previous four years. She would chart three more Top Ten songs over the next eighteen months, including the smash duet with Lionel Richie, "Endless Love".
4. "Down Under" was the second Billboard Number One in 1982 off the debut album "Business As Usual". It soon became an unofficial anthem for their country; who brought us this little taste of Australia with "Down Under"?

Answer: Men At Work

Men At Work followed "Who Can It Be Now" with an even bigger hit in "Down Under". The Olympics in Sydney featured the song several times, and the song inspired the Australian America's Cup yachting team to grab the Cup away from the US for the first time in decades.
5. Featuring work by George Harrison and ELO's Jeff Lynne, "I Won't Back Down" was this artist's first solo hit off of the album "Full Moon Fever". Lacking any "heartbreak" on this song, who performed 1989's "I Won't Back Down"?

Answer: Tom Petty

"Full Moon Fever" was Tom Petty's first solo album without the Heartbreakers, although they helped out in places on the album. George W. Bush used the song during his campaign in 2000 which got him a cease and desist order from the publisher.
6. "Right Down the Line" was this artist's second major solo hit from his album "City to City", following the mega-success of his first solo hit "Baker Street". Not being comfortable with the concept of being famous, he quickly faded from the limelight. Who is this singer/songwriter who brought us "Right Down the Line"?

Answer: Gerry Rafferty

Gerry Rafferty had some success with the band Stealer's Wheel, most notably with the song "Stuck In the Middle With You". Most of his songs were very autobiographical, and he wrote often about the price of fame. But the album "City to City" gained him more fame than he could deal with, and he quickly squelched his notoriety. Sadly he passed away in 2011 from complications of alcoholism.
7. "Down With the Sickness" was an early hit for this nu metal band. Released in 1999, it was their only single to be certified Platinum in the US during their initial twelve-year career. What band brought us "Down With the Sickness"?

Answer: Disturbed

Disturbed took a hiatus as a group in 2012 to allow its members to pursue other interests. "Down With the Sickness" remained a usual encore for the band throughout its time on tour.
8. 1964's "Downtown" was a worldwide Number One hit and later a signature song for this singer. While it was the first success she had in the US, she had begun her singing career in the 1940s and 1950s with moderate success. Who was it who musically took us "Downtown"?

Answer: Petula Clark

Petula Clark's career started taking off in Britain and Australia first and expanded its range in the 1960s. She also appeared in many films, mostly British releases. She still performs today into her seventies.
9. "Don't Bring Me Down" was a disco era hit for this group, one of several responsible for creating the genre of symphonic rock. It would be their biggest hit although not typically thought of as a signature song for them. The song was off the album, "Discovery"; who was this group?

Answer: Electric Light Orchestra

ELO (as they are often called) had a very layered, violin-laden sound that lent to being very popular during the late 70s disco era. However "Don't Bring Me Down" didn't incorporate much of the strings that often layered the tracks of previous ELO singles. The song reached number four in the US, their highest they ever achieved.
10. "Lay Down Sally" was a multi-chart hit for this artist in 1978, from his album "Slow Hand". It would be a top three song on the Billboard Hot 100 and also make the country top 40 due to its downhome country blues style. Who gave us "Lay Down Sally"?

Answer: Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton had already charted multiple ways, being involved in the groups Derek and the Dominos, Cream, The Yardbirds and Blind Faith. He began his solo career in 1974 which would continue for decades.
