Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most fans of the band know they took their name from a Monty Python skit, but not the name of the skit or who delivered this tongue-in-cheek monologue: "Rex Stardust, lead electric triangle with Toad the Wet Sprocket, has had to have an elbow removed following their recent worldwide successful tour of Finland." What combo is correct for the details on this skit? [name/actor]

Answer: Rock Notes / Eric Idle

The band said that they weren't all Monty Python fans, but liked the name.

I've yet to hear an album by these guys where someone is playing an electric triangle.
2. What album did Toad the Wet Sprocket record first? NOTE: Not the first one released by Columbia.

Answer: Bread and Circus

"Bread and Circus" was financed by the band members and cost $650 to record. It began distribution as a cassette sold in local record stores, but would be re-released after the band's signing by Columbia Records.
3. Which album has a song that is inspired by a famous Spanish novel? Clue: The album's name is inspired by the same novel.

Answer: Dulcinea

"Windmills" is an obvious reference to "Don Quixote" by Cervantes and follows his theme of an individual chasing an impossible dream.

"Dulcinea", the album's title, is also derived from "Don Quixote", referring to the title character's love interest.
4. One album had two singles that reached the Top 20. Which one?

Answer: fear

"All I Want" and "Walk on the Ocean" both reached the Billboard Top 20.

"fear" is supposed to be spelled with a lower case "f", but you will see it with an upper case "f" since everyone is used to always capitalizing the first letter of any title.
5. The band's lead singer was only 14 when they got started. What's his name?

Answer: Glen Phillips

The band's line-up:

Glen Phillips: Vocals/Guitar
Todd Nichols: Guitar
Dean Dinnig: Bass
Randy Guss: Drums
6. Toad the Wet Sprocket was put together in high school in what city?

Answer: Santa Barbara, CA

They all went to San Marcos High School. Glen was a freshman and the other guys were all juniors.

Most guys in high school in Santa Barbara were probably surfing while these guys practiced in the garage or basement.
7. One song from "In Light Syrup" makes an obvious reference to a being from the imaginary worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien. Which song?

Answer: Hobbit on the Rocks

"Hobbit on the Rocks" is a fan favorite despite never registering as a hit song.

"Careful With That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers" was actually the name of an album from a comedy troupe called Fireside Theatre. The comedy can be high-brow and very low-brow. Check them out if you get a chance.

Frodo Lives!
8. A "studio album" can be defined as an album with all original songs recorded in the studio. What was the last proper studio album by Toad the Wet Sprocket?

Answer: Coil

"Toad: A Retrospective" was their last release, but is a compilation of previously recorded material.

"In Light Syrup" collected previously unreleased material and b-sides.
9. What was Toad the Wet Sprocket's greatest hit, staying on top of Billboard's Modern Rock Charts for six weeks?

Answer: Fall Down

It was finally unseated by a fellow California band: The Offspring. The song was the Offspring's reproach of gang violence: "Come Out and Play". The title was a reference to the East Coast gang movie "The Warriors". In one scene, the leader of a gang hunting down the title gang hangs out of a car window, clicking together two Coke bottles, taunting the frightened gang members.

"Warriors...come out and play (the word "play" being drawn out to two syllables)".
10. Glen Phillips embarked on a solo career, releasing three albums: "Abulum", "Winter Pays for Summer" and "Mr. Lemons". He also released two EPs. The other guys did not remain idle and started a project of their own. What was the name of this band?

Answer: Lapdog

Frog the Dry Widget was a band formed by Brain on the cartoon "Pinky and the Brain".

Todd and Dean started Lapdog, Dean quit it and then Randy joined it. Todd and Dean recorded the album "Near Tonight" and Todd and Randy recorded the album "Mayfly".

The band reunited to do a few tours. I was even lucky enough to catch one of their shows at the Starland Ballroom in NJ.
