Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the song 'Frösche Weinen Nie' who or what doesn't cry?

Answer: Frogs

This slightly strange song by 'Die Schröders' is about someone who buys a sack full of frogs and kills them in various ways, only to find out at the end of the song that frogs have no tear glands.
2. "Ich hab' doch nie gesagt, dass du mir fehlst." What have 'Die Ärzte' never said?

Answer: I miss you

"Ich hab(e) doch nie gesagt, dass du mir fehlst" means "I've never said that I miss you." After repeating this twice the next line in the song is "Du fehlst mir." (I miss you)

This line is from a song called 'Nie Gesagt.'
3. In the song 'Es Gibt Keinen Weihnachtsmann" who do Echt tell us doesn't exist?

Answer: Father Christmas

'Der Weihnachtsmann' is the German for Father Christmas or Santa Claus. "Es gibt keinen Weihnachtsmann" = There is no Santa.
4. "Du hast mich Tausend mal belogen" sings Andrea Berg. What has the person in question doen 1000 times?

Answer: Lied to her

By lying to her you could argue that he's also betrayed her, but I was looking for the translation of the word, not the sense of what sh says. 'Belogen' is the past tense of the verb 'belügen' meaning to tell a lie. If she had said 'betrogen' (the past tense of betrügen) the answer would have been something more like betrayed.
5. "Ich komm' mir so ein bisschen komisch vor, und einsam sowieso." How do 'Die Schröders' feel?

Answer: strange and lonely

A literal (word for word) translation would be "I appear a little strange to myself, and lonely in any case." Of course this doesn't make sense in English.
"Jemandem komisch vorkommen" means 'to seem strange to somone' and the 'mir' in this sentence indicates that the 'someone' is the person doing the speaking.

Basically the song is about someone who is sitting alone singing a song for someone, he feels a little strange because he's singing to someone who isn't actually there and lonely in any case, because she isn't there.

The song is called 'Liebeslied' which means 'Love Song.'
6. "Weinst Du?" is a song by the band 'Echt.' What does the title mean?

Answer: Are you crying?

'Weinst' is the du form of the verb 'weinen' (to cry). Wein is the German word for wine and 'Wien' is 'Vienna' in German. The three words are very similar, but of course only one of them makes sense here.

This song is about a couple whose relationship is coming to an end.
7. "Ich lieg' am Strand" sings Farin Urlaub. Where does he say he is?

Answer: At the beach

"Ich lieg(e) am Stand' means 'I'm lieing on the beach.' This song comes from the album 'Endlich Urlaub.'

Farin Urlaub is not a real name, but a corruption of 'Fahr in Urlaub' meaning 'to go on holiday.'
8. 'Wir Sind Helden' sing a song about a Denkmal. What is a Denkmal?

Answer: a monument or memorial

The song 'Denkmal' appears on the album 'Die Reklamation.'
The band's name, 'Wir Sind Helden' means 'We Are Heroes.'
9. Nena sang a song called 'Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann.' She also recorded an English version of it with Kim Wilde entitled 'Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime.' But the English and German titles don't quite match. If it had ben translated word for word what would the English title have been?

Answer: Somehow, Somewhere, Sometime

Technically the 'English' version I'm referring to wasn't actually entirely English, but sung half in German and half in English. Nena sings the German part, which is exactly the same as in the original, and Kim Wilde sings the English part.

In England the best known Nena song is '99 Red Balloons"
10. "Ich will kein Engel sein" is part of a Rammstein song. But what does this mean?

Answer: I don't want to be an angel

'will' (from the modal verb wollen) means 'want' not 'will.' This lyric comes from the song 'Engel' (Angel)

Rammstein were quite popular in England for a while, although I haven't heard anything of them recently. But what's interesting is that I've yet to meet a German who's a fan of Rammstein.
