Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Two of us wearing raincoats" comes, of course, from a Beatles song. You're probably humming it right now, but can you tell me what the title of the song is?

Answer: Two of Us

From the "Let it Be" album. I was surprised to read that this song was apparently written for Linda McCartney - I always assumed it was some sort of message from Paul to John Lennon. Lennon did claim to write this song, in an interview, but reading the transcript makes it pretty clear that was just a momentary confusion. To anyone familiar with the Beatles' styles, this song is obviously a McCartney composition, and he sings lead.
2. "Button up your overcoat, when the wind is free..." is part of a list of good advice given in this song. Why do I want you to do all these sensible things, according to the lyrics?

Answer: You belong to me

A Tin Pan Alley tune from the 1920s. The best known version was by Helen Kane, the prototype for Betty Boop.

In other clothing-related lyrics -
"Wear your flannel underwear,
When you climb a tree,
Oh, take good care of yourself,
You belong to me!"
3. In Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat", what had happened to the coat the last time we saw you?

Answer: It was torn at the shoulder

"Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You'd been to the station to meet every train"

Like most Cohen songs, this one is a little obscure, lyrically. The song seems to be about a love triangle, between the singer, a woman named Jane, and the unnamed "you". Cohen says, on "The Best of Leonard Cohen" liner notes:
"I had a good raincoat then, a Burberry I got in London in 1959 . . . It hung more heroically when I took out the lining, and achieved glory when the frayed sleeves were repaired with a little leather. Things were clear. I knew how to dress in those days..."
4. "Off with my overcoat, off with my glove I need no overcoat..." Why, according to the song title, don't I need a coat?

Answer: I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

"I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" by Irving Berlin, from 1937. This song was first introduced in the show "On the Avenue" with Alice Faye and Dick Powell. It's a true standard, and has been covered by just about everybody. It tends to find itself on Christmas albums, these days.
5. "Found my coat and grabbed my hat Made the bus in seconds flat" What song are these lyrics from?

Answer: A Day in the Life

Another Beatles tune, this one from "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", 1967. This is a song that makes many people's Top Twenty Songs of All Time lists - the "Rolling Stone" "500 Greatest Songs" list has it at Number 26.

The lyric quoted in the question comes from one of the portions of the song written by Paul McCartney - he wrote the bits descriptive of a busy morning, while John Lennon contributed the "read the news today" sections.
6. "Top coat, top hat I don't worry 'cause my wallet's fat" We know why this singer's getting all dolled up - "Every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man". Who gave us this song?

Answer: ZZ Top

"Sharp Dressed Man" was on "Eliminator", from 1983. The song has been used in "Guitar Hero", and both Brad Paisley and Nickelback have done cover versions, among others.
7. What did Dolly Parton's momma make her a coat of?

Answer: Many colours

"Coat of Many Colours" is a fine example of why Dolly Parton is not just all blonde wig and big bust. A great song about her momma making a coat from the rag bag, while telling her the Bible story - a song about poverty, love, hope, nostalgia....

"There were rags of many colors
Every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together
Sewin' every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of"
8. Why is the singer wearing a "white sport coat and a pink carnation"?

Answer: He's all dressed up for the dance

From the 1957 song from Marty Robbins. We also know Marty Robbins for his song "El Paso", about a cowboy who takes two bullets through the coat because of his love for Falina, the dancing girl.
9. Who wore the "Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"?

Answer: Joseph

In the Bible, Joseph was the favourite son of his father, Jacob, who gave him a coat of many colours. Andrew Lloyd Webber has retold the story of Joseph in his musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". From the song "Joseph's Coat":
"In a class above the rest
It even went well with his vest
Such a stunning coat of many colors
How he loved his coat of many colors
It was red and yellow and green and
Brown and blue
Joseph's brothers weren't
Too pleased with what they saw"
10. In the Wilf Carter song, the Mad Trapper, Albert Johnson, was taken by the men in which colour coats?

Answer: Red

"T'was up in that far north country
Lived a trapper thought insane
Two of his redskin neighbors
To the police sent a complaint

Two redcoats of the Mounties
Who are known for their fame
Went north to find the trouble
That the trapper was put to blame"

This song is based on a true incident, a dramatic manhunt in Canada's North in the 1930s. It helped form the legend of the Mounties who "always get their man".
