Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Barry's backup singers in the late 1970's?

Answer: Lady Flash

Barry put an ad in a magazine that said "Manilow needs girls!" They came in droves, but only three were chosen for the part. "Reparatta", Muffy Hendrix and Debra Byrd were transformed into Lady Flash. While Debra was a familiar face in various tours over the years, Barry continued to work with Muffy here and there. Think Fantasia was fantastic on American Idol? She should be! Ms Byrd was the vocal coach on 'American Idol Season 3'!
2. What project does Barry claim to be his favorite?

Answer: 2:00 AM Paradise Cafe

While Barry was able to stretch his creativity along with his favorite musical styles in creating the fictional "Mayflower", and putting his love of Broadway musicals into play in "Showstoppers" and "Scores", his favorite project to date remains the "2:00 AM Paradise Cafe" album which was released in 1984.
3. What was the title of Barry's 1987 autobiography?

Answer: "Sweet Life: Adventures on the Way to Paradise"

Very interesting story! I wish he'd write an updated one!
4. What Barry song was written as an ad for a brand of Japanese fans?

Answer: "Eolia"

"Eolia" was written in the late 80's exclusively for the fan company based in Japan with the same name. Barry also appeared in the commercial singing the song. The song was available on a very small CD that you needed a special device for in order to play it in a CD player (Kind of like a 45 record). It was never released on any album.
5. What funny lady did Barry team up with for their first (and only) duet titled "The Last Duet"?

Answer: Lily Tomlin

"Last Duet" appeared on the LP "Barry" in 1980. To the best of my knowledge, Barry never sang with Joan Rivers or Whoopi Goldberg, but he did get his big start as Bette Midler's piano player in the early 1970's.
6. What major television station aired the made-for-tv movie "Copacabana" in 1985?

Answer: CBS

It was the CBS movie of the week!
7. Where will you find sorrows raining down, nothing but bad news and you'll have it up to here living with these blues?

Answer: "Swing Street"

"It's raining down sorrows and nothing but bad news. You know I've had it up to here living with these blues, but I won't let it get me down, it's not the only game in town. In my mind I'm going to Swing Street" - from 'Swing Street' (1987) There was also a made-for-tv music special of the same name broadcasted on, you guessed it, CBS!
8. Barry has a lot of songs centered around a particular woman's name, but this one's his "only girl":

Answer: Jenny

The songs "Mandy" and "Sandra" were featured on Barry's second self-titled album "Barry Manilow II" (1974). He sang about Linda in "A Linda Song" on the "Even Now" LP (1978). "You're My Only Girl (Jenny)" appeared on a greatest hits collaboration in 1989 and appears every now and then on various collections.
9. Barry wrote this song after September 11, 2001:

Answer: "Turn the Radio Up!"

"Turn the Radio Up!" was written after 9/11 as a plee to "turn the radio up, turn reality down! There's too much talk about blues turn the bulletins down!" It is on the CD "Here at the Mayflower" along with "Border Train". "Brooklyn Blues" is featured on "Swing Street" (1987) and "New York City Rhythm" is on "Trying to Get the Feeling" (1976).
10. I'll make this a sorta-easy one! What American Idol contestant floored Barry with her rendition of "Weekend In New England" when he was a guest judge in Season 3?

Answer: Jennifer Hudson

Diana DeGarmo sang "One Voice" and Fantasia sang "It's A Miracle". Tamyra Gray was a contestant in Season 1.
