Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Darkthrone hail from which country?

Answer: Norway

Their contemporaries in the country include (or have included) Mayhem, Immortal, Enslaved, Emperor, and Burzum, among others.
2. What was the band's original name?

Answer: Black Death

Problem was, there was already a band from the mid-eighties called Black Death.
3. Which record label were Darkthrone originally signed to?

Answer: Peaceville

Oystein Aarseth (aka Euronymous) wanted the band signed to his label, Deathlike Silence. But Darkthrone committed to Peaceville first.
4. On which album did the band switch record labels from Peaceville to Moonfog?

Answer: 'Panzerfaust'

The band wanted to work with Norwegians exclusively, and were then signed to Moonfog, run by Satyr of Satyricon (another Norwegian band).
5. Who played bass on the first two Darkthrone albums?

Answer: Dag Nilsen

He left the band because he didn't like the whole corpse paint, medieval weapons, and "I love Satan" attitude the band had taken.
6. By what alias does Ivan Enger go when in the band?

Answer: Zephyrous

He played guitars on the first five Darkthrone albums. When the band called him to record for 'Total Death', he had gone missing. No one has seen him since 1996.
7. By what alias does Ted Skjellum go in the band?

Answer: Nocturno Culto

An original Darkthrone member (also my personal favourite), Nocturno has played guitar and bass in the band, and does most of the vocals. He lives in the Norwegian countryside, has two children, and played guitars on one Satyricon album. He sometimes goes by the name Nocturnal Cult.
8. By what alias does Gylve Nagell go in the band?

Answer: Fenriz

The other original Darkthrone member, Fenriz had played drums on every single Darkthrone recording, and writes most of the lyrics. He also works as a DJ in a pub in Oslo, Norway.
9. On which album did the band first use their famous self description 'True Norwegian Black Metal'?

Answer: 'Transylvanian Hunger'

They use this term to describe their music, because they don't use elements such as keyboards or female vocals on their albums. This gives them a very raw, 'true' sound.
10. According to Fenriz, which two people are responsible for the development of the 'Norwegian Black Metal' style of guitar playing?

Answer: Euronymous and Snorre

Euronymous played guitar in the band Mayhem (the first Norwegian Black Metal band), and Snorre plays guitar in the band Thornes. Both players had a distinct style of guitar playing the led to the development of the sound that most Norwegian metal bands use now. By the way, Samoth and Ihshan are the guitarists from Emperor.
