Answer: Fats Domino

"Walking To New Orleans" gave Fats Domino a number six hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. It reached number 19 on the UK singles chart the same year.

Fats Domino was born Antoine Dominique Domino in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in 1928. He first hit the US R&B chart with "The Fat Man" which reached number two in 1949. Between 1955 and 1968 he charted over 60 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. 11 of those chart hits reached the Top 10 but none were number one hits. When hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 Fats Domino chose to stay in his home which was situated in a flooded area. He was presumed to have perished in the storm and someone daubed R. I. P. Fats, You Will Be Missed in red paint on his house. It was later reported that he had been rescued by a coast guard helicopter but had lost most of his possessions. President George W. Bush made a personal visit to replace the lost National Medal of Arts that president Bill Clinton had originally awarded Fats. His lost Gold records were replaced by the RIAA and Capitol records. Fats Domino was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

The Ventures were founded as The Versatones in 1958 by Bob Bogle, born Robert Lenard Bogle near Wagoner, Oklahoma, USA, in 1934 and Don Wilson born Donald Lee Wilson in Tacoma, Washington, USA, in 1933. They are the all time top US instrumental group and have released over 250 albums and sold over 110,000,000 records. Some are recycled earlier work and others are compilations but about 120 are original albums. The Ventures are still popular world wide and especially in Japan. Between 1960 and 1969 they had 14 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, three of which made the Top 10. The group were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

Answer: Del Shannon

The song was "Runaway" and it gave Del Shannon a number one hit for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. It was number one for three weeks on the UK singles chart the same year.

Del Shannon was born Charles Weedon Westover in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, in 1934. "Runaway" was written by Del Shannon/Max Crook. As well as co-writing "Runaway" Max Crook plays the central music break on his own invention, the Musitron keyboard and in my opinion must get half of the credit for the song being so successful. Al Caiola who has played with the likes of Tony Bennett, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra played guitar on the record. He was a stretcher bearer during the battle of Iwo Jima during WWII. The recording that was released had been speeded up by producer Harry Balk.

Del Shannon recorded a different version in the UK in 1967 as "Runaway '67" produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. Yet another different version was recorded and played over the credits of the 1986 TV series "Crime Story" starring Dennis Farina. The B-side of the original "Runaway" was "Jody" but on a number of singles the wrong B-side was pressed, it was "The Snake" an instrumental by Max Crook. Del Shannon was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
