Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word connects these two songs? I Keep a Close ______ That Man

Answer: Watch

John Cale is a Welsh musician who was one of the founding members of the Velvet Underground in the 1960s. After he left the band, he began an extremely influential career as a musician and a producer.

David Bowie is known as a chameleon for consistently changing his appearance and music. The song "Watch That Man" is taken from the album "Aladdin Sane" at the height of his Ziggy Stardust/Glam phase.
2. What adjective fills in the blank? Running on ______ Garden

Answer: Empty

Jackson Browne is a longtime singer-songwriter with many achievements under his belt, one of which is an honorary Doctorate of Music from Occidental College.

Elton John is a longtime musician who has frequently partnered with songwriter Bernie Taupin to create many hits. The song, "Empty Garden", however is a tribute to deceased friend John Lennon.
3. What celestial body connects these two songs? Follow the ______ King

Answer: Sun

Siouxsie and the Banshees was a band that existed since punk's explosion in 1976 until the mid-1990s. Their career has been marked with many changes in band members, with the exception of the core: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals) and Steven Severin (bass). "Follow the Sun" is the B-Side to their song "Spellbound" from the album "Juju".

The Beatles I believe need no introduction, suffice to say that this song appears on the last album they recorded together, "Abbey Road".
4. What animal can fill in the blank between these songs? Swimming _____ in the City

Answer: Horses

The song "Swimming Horses" is taken from the album "Hyaena," which is the only Banshees album to feature Robert Smith as their full-time guitarist. Siouxsie has said that the song is about smuggling women out of hostile environments.

Nina Gordon formed half of the band Veruca Salt (along with Louise Post) in the 1990s before moving on to a solo career. "Horses in the City" is a track from her first solo album "Tonight and the Rest of My Life".
5. What emotion based word connects these two songs? That's What I Call ______ is a Stranger

Answer: Love

Crowded House was a band that formed in the ashes of another band, Split Enz. This trio had a colossal hit in the 1980s with their song "Don't Dream It's Over".

The Eurythmics was a British duo consisting of David Stewart and Annie Lennox whose biggest hit was "Sweet Dreams" which was later covered by Marylin Manson.
6. Which body part can fill the gap between these two songs? All in My ______ Games

Answer: Mind

Love & Rockets is a band that formed after the dissolution of the gothic Bauhaus and side project Tones on Tail. The three members (David J, Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins) of Love & Rockets were part of Bauhaus, with only the singer Peter Murphy pursuing a full-time solo career. The song "All in My Mind" appears on their sophomore album, "Express" and in a fast and slow version.

John Lennon needs no introduction, but a piece of interesting data is that he was influenced by Primal Scream, a treatment for psychological disorders promoted by Arthur Janov. This treatment was also highly influential for another English band: Tears for Fears.
7. What duplicate word connects these two songs? The Never ______ Ever

Answer: Never

Tones on Tail was a part-side project, part new band, part experiment on the behalf of Daniel Ash (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) in the mid-eighties. The band, aside from Ash, had Kevin Haskins as drummer (longtime collaborator) and Glenn Campling as bassist. The band was very short lived and only produced one album and a handful of singles. All of the material has been compiled and released on the appropriately titled, "Everything!"

All Saints were an all-girl group whose most notable hit was "Never Ever".
8. What generic plaything can fill the void? Mind of a _____ Soldiers

Answer: Toy

Visage was essentially a super-group in their early days with such talent as Midge Ure and John McGeoch. However, the face and voice of the band was Steve Strange, whose fashion sense helped to usher in the New Romantic style/genre in the early 1980s.

Martika wrote her song "Toy Soldiers" about a friend's struggle with addiction. It was later sampled by Eminem in one of his raps.
9. What word can connect these two songs? Dance Along the ______ of Seventeen

Answer: Edge

Concrete Blonde formed in California in the late 1980s and released their eponymous debut with this song on it.

Stevie Nicks was part of the band Fleetwood Mac, but was not a founding member. In fact, she and (boyfriend at the time) Lindsey Buckingham were both performers in the US who were discovered by the members of Fleetwood Mac and added on to change their musical direction.
10. This last one is a bit tricky. You need to fill in two words to connect the songs, but the two words you fill in are also the name of another song. Do NOT use any punctuation! Sobredosis de ______ ______ of the Lens (The bands are: Soda Stereo, The Stooges, Comsat Angels)

Answer: tv eye

Soda Stereo is a long-running Argentinian band that formed in the 1980s.

The Stooges were a Michigan-based band that followed in the footsteps of MC5 and gave the world the man known as Iggy Pop. The song "T.V. Eye" is taken from their album "Funhouse".

The Comsat Angels were a British post-punk band in the 1980s who have since broken up. Their bassist, interestingly enough, shares his name with the American actor Kevin Bacon.
