Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose only top 40 hit was 'What's Your Name' from 1962? (hint: sounds like love)

Answer: Don and Juan

Ronald Trone and Claude 'Juan' Johnson, vocal duo from New York City, have, alas, both passed on to that great Doo Wop street corner in the sky. Hint? Don Juan, the great lover, of course. Sam and Dave, well known Rock and Roll Hall of Fame R&B duo had '60s hits such as 'Soul Man,' 'Thank You,' and 'Hold On (I'm Coming).' You may recall Stan and Ollie by their movie name, Laurel and Hardy. Dan and Jean is a spoonerism for Jan and Dean, sixties surf rock duo ('Surf City,' 'Little Old Lady From Pasedena,' etc.)
2. Which female dynamo belted out 'What's A Matter Baby' in 1962? (remember, obscure)

Answer: Timi Yuro

Yuro, born in Chicago in 1940, previously scored in 1961 with 'Hurt.' Called "the little girl with the big voice," she was sometimes mistakenly identified as a black male singer. Still, she had nowhere near the name recognition or string of hits enjoyed by the other three singers.
3. Who wrote and recorded 'What'd I Say' in 1959?

Answer: Ray Charles

Ray Charles, born in Albany, Georgia in 1930, and completely blind from glaucoma by age 7, was crowned by his peers and music industry experts with the sobriquet "the genius." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and has influenced just about every rock and roller and R&B artist who ever came down the pike.

His back up singers, known as The Raelettes, have an interesting history. Originally called "The Cookies," Ray supposedly renamed them to reflect his intimate relations with each individual who joined (as in they "let Ray..."). Unquestionably, Ray took Della Bea Robinson, a second wave member, as his second wife, and also had a child with one of the original group, Margie Hendrix. (see Jason Ankeny's artist bio exerpted on Allmusic.com)
4. 'What Does It Take' - Which artist asks this question in his 1969 hit song with the same title?

Answer: Junior Walker and the All Stars

Autry DeWalt Walker was born in Blythesville, Arkansas 6/14/1931. He died of cancer at age 65. He played saxophone as well as singing lead for the All Stars on this smooth, mellow ballad and numerous others. His earlier major hit was 'Shotgun,' from 1965. Kanye West, mega hip hop star and partner of Kim Kardashian, is just a bow to the present. Joe Jeffries Group recorded the stellar and under-appreciated 'My Pledge of Love,' in 1969. Marvin Gaye was another R&B superstar from the 1960s with a string of hits and R&R HOF credentials.
5. Name the 1950s group ( they got Yakety) with multiple top 40 humorous hits who recorded 'What About Us' in 1959 ?

Answer: The Coasters

The Coasters many hits included, 'Poison Ivy,' 'Yakety Yak', and 'Charlie Brown'. The Drifters were another popular R&B crossover group with multiple '50s and '60s hits, who are also in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Dream Lovers are a more obscure group and the Sliders are oysters, not singers.
6. Jimmy Ruffin, brother of David Ruffin of the Temptations, had his own solo hit in 1966. What was it?

Answer: What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted

Jimmy's follow-up hit was, "I've Passed This Way Before." He was born in Collinsville , Mississippi. Younger brother David was born in Whynot, Mississippi. Why? Why not, said his parents.
7. Buddy Holly released 'what' song in 1958?

Answer: What To Do

Charles Hardin Holley, born 9/7/1936 in Lubbock, Texas, was a pioneer and innovator in the genesis of rock and roll music. He was one of the first to write his own songs for his group and take charge of the production and marketing of his music. He died in a plane crash on 2/3/1959 on the way to a gig in Iowa, along with Richie Valens and J. P. Richardson (the Big Bopper).

Despite dying at 22, his guitar stylings, song writing and stage presence had a huge influence on a generation of rock and rollers, and is still felt today.

His tragic death was immortalized in the 1971 song "Miss American Pie," by Don MacClean, and in a 1978 biopic, "The Buddy Holly Story," starring Gary Busey.
8. According the lyrics from Jackie DeShannon's breakthrough hit, what the world needs now is what?

Answer: love, sweet love

Hal David and Burt Bacharach's song "What The World Needs Now is Love" raised the profile of this talented singer/songwriter. She worked with and/or wrote for The Beatles, The Searchers, Jimmy Page, Randy Newman, Van Morrison and others. JD is still active in the business.
9. "What in the World's Come Over You." Who penned then sang this soulful lament in 1960 (He was born in Windsor, Ontario) ?

Answer: Jack Scott

Born January 28th, 1936 with the name Jack Scafone, this Canadian crooner used a distinctive style and low voice for his powerful love ballads. Scott Jackson is the obligatory fictional name reversal, actor Emilio Estevez was born in 1962, and Buddy Holly, rock and roll legend, was born in Texas and died in a well documented plane crash in 1958.
10. Which song asks a question which sums up this quiz, and is by a group whose name is a question?

Answer: Who Are You

All are real top 40 songs, but only The Who, the group behind 'Who Are You,' is a question. 'Who'll Stop the Rain' is by Creedence Clearwater Revival, 'Who's Makin' Love' is by Johnny Taylor, and 'Who Put The Bomp' is by Barry Mann.
