1. Who wrote "The Erl King"?

Answer: Schubert

This ballad was written as a setting for a poem by Goethe. The story tells of a father riding home late at night with his son, who hears the Erl King (death) beckoning him to come to him. When the two make it home at the end, the father sees that it is too late. The Erl King won the race, and the boy is dead.
2. Who wrote two suites for the play "Peer Gynt"?

Answer: Grieg

"Peer Gynt" is a play by Henrik Ibsen. Edvard Grieg wrote incidental music to accompany the play. He later took eight selections to make two four-movement suites.
3. Who wrote the Brandenburg Concertos?

Answer: Bach

These were a famous set of concerto grossos by JS Bach. He dedicated them to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt, who paid him the equivalent of $22 for them.
4. Who wrote a set of Hungarian Dances for two pianos?

Answer: Brahms

These 21 dances are mostly Hungarian folk tunes which Brahms arranged, originally for two players. He then rearranged some of the dances for solo piano and for orchestra.
5. Who wrote a set of Hungarian Rhapsodies for solo piano?

Answer: Lizst

These showy pieces were also inspired by Hungarian folk tunes. Franz Lizst arranged these 19 rhapsodies for two pianos, piano trio, and orchestra.
6. Who wrote the "Songs Without Words?"

Answer: Mendelssohn

There are eight books of these songs without words, with six songs in each volume. Two of the books were published after Mendelssohn's death. An orchestrated version of one of the songs without words, "Andante Maestoso", was played at Mendelssohn's funeral, and is now known as the "Funeral March".
7. Who wrote "Clair de Lune"?

Answer: Debussy

This is the beautiful third movement of Debussy's "Suite Bergamasque". Its name means Moonlight, and it has been featured in movies and TV shows.
8. Who wrote over 100 symphonies?

Answer: Haydn

Haydn wrote a total of 104 symphonies in the 36 years from 1759 to 1795.
9. Who wrote the "Eroica" Symphony?

Answer: Beethoven

Beethoven was going to dedicate this symphony to Napoleon, but when Napoleon declared himself Emperor of the French, Beethoven erased his name in the dedication so hard that he wore a hole in the paper. This symphony marks a transition from the Classical to the Romantic period in music.
10. Who wrote 41 symphonies?

Answer: Mozart

Mozart wrote his first symphony in 1764 at the tender age of 8. His last three symphonies, in Eb, Gm, and C respectively, were written over only a few weeks in 1788.
