Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. U2 made their first (and only, to date) appearance on "The Simpsons" in 1997, in an episode entitled "Trash of the Titans." Which of their own songs was the band seen performing at a concert crashed by Homer Simpson?

Answer: Pride (In the Name of Love)

In the show, the band members were seen as pawns in Homer's attempt to become Springfield's Sanitation Commissioner. Although Bono was impressed with Homer's commitment to the environment, the Simpson family left a less-than-favourable impression on U2.
2. Which member of U2 co-wrote a song entitled "Put Em Under Pressure", which was used as the theme song of the Irish football team in the 1990 World Cup in Italy?

Answer: Larry Mullen

The 1990 World Cup was the first that Ireland had qualified for, and Larry Mullen, being a soccer fan, came on board to co-write and co-produce, and reputedly play drums for, the team's official song.
3. During U2's Zoo TV tour, Bono made it a tradition to make one phone call during each concert. Most of the time, the recipients of the calls were (relatively) important people, like Bill Clinton. However, one night's phone call resulted in an order of 10,000 pizzas being brought to the crowd. In which US city were U2 playing when this happened?

Answer: Detroit

Inspired by an advertisement on one of the stadium's giant television screens, Bono rang a Detroit pizza parlour called Speedy's and asked for 10,000 pizzas. Hundreds of pepperoni pizzas made their way through the throng as U2 was preparing for their encore.
4. In February 2003, Bono was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in which country?

Answer: France

The award was presented to Bono by French President Jacques Chirac, and was based on Bono's tireless work for debt relief in Africa since 2000.
5. U2 played their first concert in Japan in November 1983. In what city did this occur?

Answer: Osaka

Even though this was the band's first time in Asia, they evidently had quite a following already as their were no spare seats at any of their Japanese concerts.
6. The video of U2's 1998 song "The Sweetest Thing" features a cast of many performing around the members of the band. However, there is one special guest whom we see for a split second just as the video is starting. What is her name?

Answer: Ali Hewson

Ali Hewson (nee Stewart) is of course the wife of Bono, and has been since they were married in 1982. Bono wrote "The Sweetest Thing" as an apology for missing her birthday back in 1987, but he deemed the song too much of a pop song to be included on the album the band was preparing, which was to become "The Joshua Tree".

A decade later, when U2's "Best of 1980-1990" was being planned, "The Sweetest Thing" was resurrected and the video played out as a parade saying sorry to Ali. She agreed to participate so long as the proceeds from the song would go to her own charity, the Chernobyl Children's Fund.
7. U2 has a reputation for supporting social justice, and one of the first things that cemented them in this was their participation in Bob Geldof's "Band-Aid", performing on the single "Do They Know it's Christmas?". However, only two members of the band took part in this record-breaking 1984 event; who were they?

Answer: Bono and Adam Clayton

Bono and Adam Clayton played alongside musicians such as Sting, Boy George, Phil Collins, and Geldof himself, to raise eight million pounds for famine relief in Africa.
8. U2 has received a lot of accolades in their more than two decades of music. Of these four major awards, which was the one that U2 received first?

Answer: Brit Award

U2 won their first Brit Award in 1983, which was in the "Best Live Act" category. Their first Rolling Stone Music Award came in 1985; their first Grammy Award was in 1988; and they had to wait until 1995 to receive an MTV Award.
9. U2 proved to the world that these Irishmen indeed consider the USA a second home, when they played at the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2002. Coming just four months after the events of September 11 in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, U2, and Bono in particular, did their best to show their support for their American friends. Three songs were played at the show in memory of the victims of September 11; which of these was not one of them?

Answer: Walk On

The 2002 Super Bowl halftime show was toned down considerably in relation to previous years, and U2 continued with that mood by keeping the stadium in the dark except for a giant video screen that listed the names of those who had lost their lives on September 11.
10. The eighth song on U2's 2000 album "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is called "Peace on Earth." About halfway through the song, a list of names is sung by Bono: "Sean and Julia, Gareth, Ann and Breda." They are the names of people who were killed by a terrorist bomb in which city?

Answer: Omagh

Being from the Republic of Ireland, U2 have long been concerned with the events that have plagued Northern Ireland. Omagh was the scene of the worst terrorist attack, where on August 15, 1998, a car bomb exploded and killed 29 people. Bono wrote "Peace on Earth" in rememberance of this atrocity, and mentioned the names of Sean McLaughlin, Julia Hughes, Gareth Conway, Ann McCombe, and Breda Devine, who were all killed in Omagh.
