In fact, she occupies position number one in the Rolling Stone Magazine list of '100 greatest singers of all time'!. Franklin has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards and she has sold over 75 million records worldwide.

It should be mentioned that in 1987, she became the first woman inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Billie's real name was Eleanora Fagan; she had a massive influence in the jazz scene owing to her strong, yet melodic voice. According to Rolling Stone magazine her singing style could 'subtly twist rhythm and expertly manipulate melody in order to personalize every song she sang'.

Her career took off when she started singing for the 'New York's Café Society', one of the first interracial nightclubs. However, her heroin addiction finally led to her death at the age of 44.

According to Bonnie Raitt 'James is often thought of as the ultimate blues mama, her voice a steamroller fueled by brass and sass'. James died in the early 2012 at the age of 73.
