Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which wild Newcastle band did John Steele play drums?

Answer: The Animals

Singer Eric Burdon had a moderately successful solo career following the break up of The Animals, as did keyboard player Alan Price. Bassist Chas Chandler had success of another kind as manager of Jimi Hendrix.
2. Mick Avory was the drummer for which hugely successful London outfit who, among other things, enjoyed a late evening "view from a bridge"?

Answer: The Kinks

Brothers Ray and Dave Davies are more instantly recognised as the leading lights of this wonderful group. Ray Davies' songwriting talents bear comparison with the greats of the business. Mick Avory actually came in as a replacement drummer just prior to the beginning of the success story. One of their best loved hits was "Waterloo Sunset"-the "view from a bridge."
3. Which high flying band featured Michael Clarke as one of its founder members?

Answer: The Byrds

The Byrds rode on the crest of the psychedelic revolution, having a string of hits in the mid to late sixties before, like many other bands, undergoing a series of line up changes. The most successful member of the group in the following years was undoubtedly David Crosby who joined with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, forming the highly originally named Crosby, Stills and Nash.

These three troubadours are actually performing in Bonnie Scotland, only fifty miles away from me, in 2009!
4. Dave Grohl took a back seat to a charismatic icon no longer with us. In which band was he the drummer?

Answer: Nirvana

They say only the good die young, some would argue only the stupid. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Jim Morrison of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin- the list could go on and on. Foolish or not, what a great legacy has been left by all the early musical departures of this world.
5. Now a sports presenter, Dougie Vipond found fame as the drummer with this colourful Scottish band.

Answer: Deacon Blue

Deacon Blue served as vehicle for the talents of singer Ricky Ross. It has been said by some, not me I hasten to add, that Ricky always thought he was a better singer than he actually was. Nevertheless, Deacon Blue worked hard to produce some successful, if rather bland, music.
6. Let's hear it for the girls. Debbie Peterson provided the beat for which Los Angeles formed girl band?

Answer: The Bangles

Strangely enough the Bangles seem to have enjoyed most success in the U.K. However "Eternal Flame" reached number one on both sides of the Atlantic.
7. Simon Crow was part of this Irish band led by a crusader who probably inspired another Irishman, Bono, to continue championing the less fortunate.

Answer: The Boomtown Rats

Ah, good old Sir Bob Geldof. He annoyed and pestered so many people that his perseverance paid off to a certain extent, though, I'm sure he would agree, the governments of the world could, and should, do more to help the needy. It would appear that Bono has taken up the cause. Good luck to him.
8. Epitome of California's sun, sand and surfing ideology, this group was by far the best known, and successful, of its era and, indeed, subsequent ones. Dennis Wilson was the drummer and the band was, of course, -------

Answer: The Beach Boys

Dennis was the middle of the three Wilson brothers, the others being Brian and Carl, who along with a friend, Al Jardine and a cousin, Mike Love were in the forefront of the "Surfing Revolution" of the sixties. Sadly Dennis drowned in 1983.
9. This three piece band was hugely successful. How could it fail with three such talents? You may argue that the drummer was not the least well known of the trio but humour me for the sake of the quiz, please. Ginger Baker, with another two legends, made up which tasty band?

Answer: Cream

Who will ever forget Cream's farewell concert at the Albert Hall in London? An experience, such as the one Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker provided, only comes along very rarely.
10. On the departure of Peter Gabriel from this band, Phil Collins went on to become, arguably, the most successful drummer/vocalist of them all. Which band featured both gentlemen?

Answer: Genesis

The days are long since gone when Phil was content to pound the drums with a microphone strapped to his head. He's now centre stage with a huge catalogue of hits.
