Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the album, "A Nod Is As Good As a Wink...to a Blind Horse", which band asked us to "Stay With Me" in 1971?

Answer: Faces

Faces changed their name from Small Faces after vocalist/guitarist Steve Marriott left the band to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. Marriott was replaced by Rod Stewart on vocals and Ronnie Wood on guitar and this was their first major hit, charting on both sides of the Atlantic. Faces certainly had a star studded line up as apart from Stewart and Wood they featured Kenney Jones (future Who member) on drums, Ian McLagan (future Rolling Stones sideman) on keyboards and Ronnie Lane (future Slim Chance member as well as collaborations with Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend) on bass.

3. I once was at a field party where we had a bonfire going and about 12 cars parked around it. My date got out of my car and went to Frenchy's cool van because I had warm beer, and he had chilled wine. I was feeling like Del Shannon and his number one hit from 1961. What song am I thinking of?

Answer: Runaway

Del Sahnnon's hit "Runaway" was originally titled "Little Runaway". It was written by Shannon and Max Crook, and stayed at number one on the Billboard charts for four weeks in 1961. Several singers/bands recorded the song over the years, including Bonnie Raitt, The Traveling Wilburys, (great version!) and Elvis Presley, to name a few. Del Shannon died in 1990.

"Hit The Road Jack" was written by Percy Mayfield, and made famous by Ray Charles also in 1961 . "Cold as Ice" was released by Foreigner (1977). "We Gotta Get out of This Place", was done by The Animals (1965).

I guess I was "Wishin' you were here by me, To end this misery..."

Pit parties or Field parties were quite popular back then. We used a empty field, usually built a bonfire, word was passed, and people showed up! One of the more favourite locations was "Lovers Lane" which was a disused dead end road leading into a field. I wonder if this still goes on?

4. In 1972, Uriah Heep came out with this album which many fans, and critics alike, consider their best album ever. It includes such hits as "Easy Living" and "Circle of Hands".

Answer: Demons & Wizards

Although the album cover and the title suggest a medieval fantasy, the band claims this album was just a collection of songs they had.

5. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is a song by a band whose bass player was offered a trial by West Ham United football club when he was 14 years old. Who is the band?"

Answer: Iron Maiden

Steve Harris is the bassist and apart from regular shouts of "Up the Hammers" at gigs he also shows his love for the team by having a West Ham badge on his bass. In 2004, the band sold replica West Ham shirts at gigs, emblazoned with the Iron Maiden logo. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" was from 1982's "The Number Of The Beast" album, the first to feature vocalist Bruce Dickinson.

6. Which instrument, not usually considered a rock and roll instrument, is highlighted in the AC/DC song "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock 'n' Roll)"

Answer: Bagpipes

This song was the first track off the "T.N.T" album released in December of 1975. The bagpipes were played by vocalist Bon Scott and were so closely associated with him that Brian Johnson, the singer who replaced Scott after his death, refused to play the song live out of respect for Bon.

7. Procol Harum's first hit, "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" is well recognized (there are now over 1000 covers of the song) since first being released in May 1967. What songwriting team came up with this one as the band's debut?

Answer: Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher and Keith Reid

When the record came out, there was actually no set band. What became Procol Harum formed during the recording of the first album. Keith Reid as the lyricist has always been considered a full-fledged member. Interestingly, Fisher was originally not given credit for his part in the writing of this song (only Brooker and Reid) and sued Brooker and his music publisher 38 years later in 2005. The final decision by the House of Lords gave that recognition to Fisher in 2009 after appeals back and forth in the landmark case.

8. Which of the following bird-related hits was actually written as a song of hope for African Americans fighting discrimination in the U.S.?

Answer: "Blackbird" by the Beatles

Paul McCartney has been quoted by numerous media sources as stating that "Blackbird" was inspired by the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. in the 1960s, and particularly by the "Little Rock Nine", a group of high school students who fought segregation in Little Rock, Arkansas.

9. Used in the movie "Mask" starring Cher, and in the Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck picture, "Armageddon", which Bob Seger song starts with the line,"Took a look down a westbound road, right away I made my choice"?

Answer: Roll Me Away

"Roll Me Away" was from the Seger's 1982 album "The Distance" and featured Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band on piano. All the possible answers were Seger tracks and of those, "We've Got Tonite" gave him his biggest UK hit when it was re released in 1995, although the spelling was changed to "Tonight."

10. Michael Lee Aday blasted out of Dallas, Texas in 1977 with and like a "Bat Out of Hell." What was Aday's stage name?

Answer: Meat Loaf

According to Meat Loaf's autobiography, "To Hell and Back," his birth name was Marvin Lee Aday. As an overweight child he saw a Levi's commercial that sang "Poor, fat Marvin can't wear Levi's." The ad hurt his feelings so much he came to hate both Levi's and the name Marvin. As soon as he was old enough he had his name legally changed to Michael. The name Meat Loaf came from a nickname his dad gave him as a child. Meat claims he has no idea why.

All the other choices are Texan rockers.
