His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium, born 15th April 1960, ascended the throne on 21st July 2013. He succeeded his father, King Albert II, who abdicated the throne due to poor health. King Phillippe married Countess Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz in 1999, and together they had four children, Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Eleonore.

As cousin to Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Margrethe II (b. 1940) became head of Europe's oldest monarchy when she ascended the throne in 1972. She was once quoted as saying, "I will remain on the throne until I fall off". As a keen artist, she has shown her work at various exhibitions under the pseudonym of Ingahild Grathmer.

She married Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat in 1967 and they had two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.
3. His Serene Highness Sovereign Prince Hans-Adam

The small Principality of Liechtenstein is a doubly landlocked microstate situated between Switzerland and Austria. HSH Sovereign Prince Hans-Adam, born on 14th February 1945, took over ruling the country five years before his father's death in 1989. He became one of the world's richest head's of state following a career in banking. He married Countess Marie Aglae Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau in 1967 and they resided at Vaduz Castle just on the outskirts of the capital city.

Henri has been the monarchical head of state for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He graduated from the University of Geneva with a degree in political science and it was here that he met his future wife, Brazilian born Maria Teresa Mestre y Batista. He took over reigning Luxembourg in 2000 following the abdication of his father.
5. His Serene Highness Sovereign Prince Albert II

As son of the late Hollywood film star, Grace Kelly, and Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, HSH Sovereign Prince Albert II took over the small coastal principality in 2005. Known for his playboy lifestyle and many relationships as a bachelor, he eventually settled down to marry South African Olympic swimmer, Charlene Wittstock in 2011.

Beatrix of the Netherlands abdicated her throne in 2013 and her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, took over the reins. Born in 1967, he started a military career with the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1985 and was honourably discharged shortly before his coronation. His final rank was Brigadier General. His wife, Argentinian born Queen Maxima, became his queen consort when he was crowned.

Born in 1936, King Harald V took over the throne when his father Olav V died in 1991. A keen yachtsman, Harald represented Norway in three Olympic games, 1964, 1968 and 1972. He married his wife, Sonja, in 1967, and together they had two children, Princess Martha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon.

King Felipe VI ascended to the throne in 2014 on the abdication of his father, Juan Carlos I. Felipe once quoted, "A king should not lose his perception of what it is like to be somebody normal." A keen sportsman, he competed in the Spanish sailing team at the 1992 Olympic Games. His wife Letizia, who he married in 2004, is often portrayed in the world's press as a fashion icon.
9. His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf

HM King Carl XVI Gustaf was born in 1946 to Prince Gustaf Adolf who died prematurely in an airplane crash a year after his son was born. Carl XVI Gustaf ascended the throne when his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, died in 1973. He turned down the traditional title "By the Grace of God King of the Swedes, the Goths/Geats and the Wends", and just took the shortened version, "King of Sweden" instead.

He married Silvia Renate Sommerlath in 1976 and they had two daughters, Victoria and Madeleine, and one son, Carl Philip.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Wife to Prince Philip of Greece, she became mother to Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward, grandmother to Peter, Zara, William, Harry, Beatrice, Eugenie, Louise and James.

Her first great granddaughter, Savannah, was born in 2010.
