Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these "French singers" actually has the Belgian nationality?

Answer: Salvatore Adamo

Adamo was born on Sicily but is now a naturalised Belgian, just as his fellow-Italian the Belgian Queen Paola ; Yves Montand was born in Italy as Yvo Livi; Charles Aznavour is of Armenian descent.
2. Many Frenchmen overlook that though George Simenon spent a large part of his life in Paris, he had been born at Liège and always considered himself as a "Liégeois". His star detective however was a true Parisian police chief. His name:_____________

Answer: Maigret

Lapointe is Maigret's assistant and just as Dr. Watson in the Holmes' stories functions as the great commissaire's 'confidant'.
3. Among the (semi-)Belgians who, when successful in France, carefully covered up their non-French origins there is of course Jean Philippe Smet, who always stuck to what is in fact only his artist's name:________________

Answer: Johnny Hallyday

Johnny Hallyday was born in Paris but his father was a Schaerbeekois. His Belgian father never took care of his son.
4. Which of these top-class "French", or at least francophone, strip-cartoonists is the only one who is indeed a genuine Frenchman, and NOT a Belgian?

Answer: Goscinny ("Asterix le Gaulois")

The only genuine Frenchman is Goscinny. And even in Goscinny's case there are Belgian connections in his career. He was born in Paris in 1926, but in 1928 he left for the Argentine. As a Jew he had little reason to return to Europe, so he stayed in the Americas till 1945.

In 1946 he returned to France. In 1949 he met with Maurice Debevere, a Belgian from Courtrai, with whom he was to create "Lucky Luke", which was first published in the Belgian review "Spirou". "Petit Nicolas" was published in "Le Moustique",another Belgian "strip cartoon review".

In 1951 Goscinny met Uderzo with whom he was to create "Asterix" in 1959. From then on his story was mainly a Parisian one. In 1977 after a visit to Jerusalem he was taken to hospital in Paris for cardiac tests.

He did not survive them, and died on 5 November 1977.
5. Even the great French singer Maurice Chevalier has Belgian roots and was born as Michel Van Den Bossche.

Answer: False

Michel Van Den Bossche is a well-known animal rights activist and should not be confused with the singer in the straw hat. What is true however is that Maurice Chevalier's mother was a Brussels woman of the name of Van Den Bossche.
