Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With the moon being the ruling planet in Cancer, it is appropriate that the last person, from the Apollo space missions of the 1970's, to land on the moon was a Cancerian. Sounding more like a former member of the Beatles, which of the following spaced-out crabs had that distinction?

Answer: Harrison Schmitt

Schmitt was a member of the Apollo 17 mission which launched December 7, 1972. He followed his commander, Eugene Cernan, down the steps of the lunar module thereby making him the "last" person to land on the moon. On the return to the module this order was reversed and, as such, it made Cernan the last man to "walk" on the moon.
Schmitt, born 3 July, 1935, was a geologist and part of his mission was to collect samples of moon rock. He later left the space programme and became the US Senator for New Mexico from 1977 to 1983.
THE OTHER CRABS: George Nelson completed successful missions on the Challenger, Columbia and Discovery space shuttles during the 1980's; George Hale was a 19th century solar astronomer who strongly influenced young astronomers such as Harlow Shapley and Edwin Hubble. John Glenn is one of America's most respected astronauts and was an original member of the Mercury Space Programme.
2. Cancer is a water sign and those born under its influence tend to be strong story-tellers. With these two qualities in mind, which of the following scribbler crabs was a marine archaeologist who released his first novel, "Mediterranean Capers", ("Mayday" in some countries) in 1973 and introduced the world to the character Dirk Pitt?

Answer: Clive Cussler

As a marine explorer Cussler has located over sixty shipwreck sites. He is also a founding member of NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency). NUMA lists amongst its achievements the discovery of the wreck of the 'Mary Celeste'. He has also co-authored the 'Oregon File' series with Craig Dirgo and John DuBrul and the 'Isaac Bell' tales with Justin Scott. THE OTHER CRABS: All of them have published works that have had some connection to the water; Wyndham launched "The Kraken Awakes" (also known as 'Out of the Deeps') in 1953, Hemingway released his classic work "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1952 and Tom Stoppard's first written work for the theatre was "A Walk on Water" in 1964. Coincidently Stoppard's first written work for television was 1975's "Three Men in a Boat".
3. Silver, which sits nicely in the title of the UK hit song 'Hi Ho, Silver Lining', is a strong influence for Cancerians. With a name that sounds like a brand of beer, which of the following strummer crabs was inspired to release the record in March of 1967?

Answer: Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck replaced Eric Clapton as the guitarist for The Yardbirds in 1965, was ranked number 14 in Rolling Stone magazine's original list of 'The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time' list and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2009. He has a reputation for being a perfectionist, a trait which did not sit well with his quick temper. It is reported that the creation of the rock-star, Nigel Tufnel of 'This is Spinal Tap' fame was drawn from Beck's characteristics.
The song, 'Hi Ho, Silver Lining', was written by Scott English and Larry Weiss and has since been covered numerous times including, ironically, by a band called 'Giant Crab'.
THE OTHER CRABS: These gentlemen also have an argent link. Kris Kristofferson's second album was titled 'The Silver Tongued Devil and I' and, for good measure, he held a role alongside Richard Dreyfus in the 2004 movie 'Silver City'. Answer: Meyer Lansky

Lansky, Luciano and Bugsy Siegel were lifelong friends though the story goes that the mob ended Seigel's life after getting the nod from Lansky. The main thrust of Lansky's empire came from gambling operations set up in Las Vegas and Cuba. He passed away as a result of lung cancer at age eighty in 1983. THE OTHER CRABS: Dillinger was gunned down by the FBI outside the Biograph Theatre in 1934. Jack Diamond was shot in the back of the head at his hide-out in Albany, New York and Machine Gun Kelly passed away in Leavenworth Federal Prison in 1954.

Answer: Robert A. Heinlein

Robert A Heinlein along with Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov were known as the 'Big Three' of the science fiction genre. His attention to detail and plausibility in respect to the engineering and science aspects within his work was a major reason for the elevation of the genre.

The story, 'Double Star' won a Hugo award in 1956 and its storyline of a down on his luck actor impersonating a country's leader has been echoed in such movies as 'Moon Over Parador' (1988) and 'Dave' (1993). THE OTHER CRABS: Clive Cussler in his story 'Deep Six' (1984) employs a double to impersonate the President of the United States after he'd been kidnapped by Korean and Soviet agents. Christopher Priest's 'Prestige' (1995) records the rivalry between two magicians, one of whom uses a twin brother in a disappearing and re-appearing act. J.J. Abrams is the creator of the television series 'Alias' (2001), which sees its main character, Sydney Bristow, assume various aliases to complete her missions. Abrams is also the screenwriter of 'Mission Impossible III' (2006), a spy thriller in which characters assume alternate identities.
