Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony." So stated, which much loved believer of non-violence who died at the hand of an assassin?

Answer: Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) is known worldwide by the epithet "Mahatma" meaning venerable. His definition of happiness is in keeping with his philosophies for a peaceful life which, in its simplest terms, means harmony and balance in all things.
2. "A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of." Which English authoress, who wrote the famous scene of the eligible bachelor walking out of a lake with his wet shirt clinging to his torso, gave this as her recipe for happiness?

Answer: Jane Austen

Who can forget the sight of Mr Darcy, of "Pride and Prejudice", emerging from his dip in the lake? My own particular favourite incarnation was that portrayed by Colin Firth in the 1995 BBC TV series. Jane Austen (1775-1817) stayed single her whole lifetime.

She did once accept a marriage proposal, but recanted after due consideration. She chose not to marry for money that would help her family, so took to writing to raise it instead.
3. "Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I possess I thank the Lord that I've been blessed With more than my share of happiness" So sings which comedian from Liverpool, known for his sticking out teeth, Diddy men and tickling stick?

Answer: Ken Dodd

Kenneth Arthur "Ken" Dodd (born 1927) is most famous as a comedy performer in the traditional "Music Hall" style. He has also acted on stage, film and television, sung several hit songs (including the UK chart topping "Tears" in 1965) and has written his biography. The sticking out teeth were caused by a bicycle accident as a child.

"To me this world is a wonderful place
I'm the luckiest human in the human race
I've got no silver and I've got no gold
But I've got happiness in my soul.

Happiness to me is an ocean tide
A sunset fading on a mountain side
A big old heaven full of stars up above
When I'm in the arms of the one I love.

Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I possess
I thank the Lord that I've been blessed
With more than my share of happiness.

Happiness is a field of grain
Turning its face to the falling rain
I see it in the sunshine, breathe it in the air
Happiness happiness everywhere.

A wise old man told me one time
Happiness is a frame of mind
When you go to measuring my success
Don't count my money count happiness".

The lyrics can be found in many different places.
4. "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be." So stated which famous American president, gunned down on a night off?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Probably the most famous American of all time, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) died during his second term as President. He was a man who embodied the "American dream", rising from his birth in a log cabin to the heady heights as President of USA. Although he has had his detractors over the years, it would be wrong to condemn any of his actions by the rules of a later age. Without him, America would not be the country that it is today.

He is a man who stood up to be counted for what he believed in and paid the ultimate price.
5. "By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher." This was the opinion of which Greek philosopher known through the work of his equally famous pupil and for his teaching method?

Answer: Socrates

The Socratic teaching method is to ask questions. The pupil is guided to direct his thoughts and come to the, hopefully, correct solutions. Plato wrote the most famous work about Socrates, but as both gentlemen lived and died over two hundred years before the birth of Christ, a full biography is not possible.
6. "Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions." This was stated by Lhamo Dondrub who is more familiarly known to the world by what name?

Answer: Dalai Lama

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was born Lhamo Dondrub in 1935. His shortened religious, rather than family name, is Tenzin Gyatso. For the curious, the full version is Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso. His Holiness is a modern religious leader, making full use of modern technology.

He often appears on television, has written several books and even has a Twitter account.
7. "Happiness can exist only in acceptance." So stated Eric Arthur Blair the English writer. By which name is he best known?

Answer: George Orwell

Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950) wanted to be noticed from an early age and managed it throughout his all too short life. As a child he did this by standing on his head to greet a girl. As an adult he warned against Communism and government interference through his novels that are still read throughout the world.

He was a teacher, policeman, journalist, traveller and writer who found his own way to influence the world.
8. "Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society. It is a goal and an essential part of my life - a kind of destiny." This was the desire of which lady whose life was cut short, just as she seemed to be at her happiest?

Answer: Princess Diana

Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997) famously stated that she would like to be the Queen of Hearts. The mother of Princes William and Harry of Wales led a much troubled public life, but when tragedy struck in Paris she seemed at last to be happy and in love.
9. "Happiness is good health and a bad memory." Which three times Oscar winning actress, ostracised by Hollywood due to bearing her lover's child before marrying him, said this?

Answer: Ingrid Bergman

Ingrid Bergman (1915-1982) was the much loved Swedish actress, best remembered as the star of "Casablanca" torn between her love for Humphrey Bogart and Paul Henreid. Her personal life was as dramatic in its own way as she was still married to her first husband when she fell in love with the man who was later to become her second husband.
10. "Don't Worry, Be Happy", the title of this quiz, was a hit single in 1988 by Bobby McFerrin. It was also an often repeated phrase by which Indian spiritual leader who died in 1969?

Answer: Meher Baba

Meher Baba, birth name Merwan Sheriar Irani (1894-1969) started his spiritual journey age 19. Seven years later he started to gather followers and just two years after that, he stopped speaking out loud. He continued to communicate with his followers and often used the phrase, "Don't worry, be happy" as well as longer variants, in transatlantic cables to encourage his followers.

"Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin was the first a cappella (voice only, no instruments) song to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video released at the same time as the single starred the late, great Robin Williams and his fellow comedian, Bill Irwin.

Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, Walter Gropius and Boris Karloff all died in 1969 too.
