Answer: Both

Elizabeth was his granddaughter through Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Mary was his great-granddaughter through Margaret and James IV of Scotland. Margaret and Henry VIII were brother and sister. Elizabeth and Mary were second cousins.

Mary's father James V died of an unknown illness at Falkland Palace, Fife, when she was only five days old. Upon hearing he that had a daughter James reportedly said, "It came with a lass and it will end with a lass" referring to the Stuart rule of Scotland.

Elizabeth's mother Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII was beheaded when Elizabeth I was only two and a half years old.

But Elizabeth sent the baby a present, anyway.

Mary's husband was staying at a house at Kirk O'Field outside of Edinburgh when the house blew up and he was killed. Henry was recuperating from an illness at the time. The oddities were that his body was found wearing a nightshirt outside of the house without a mark on it. His servant Taylor lay dead beside him. It was later ascertained that both had been strangled.

Afterwards Queen Elizabeth I claimed that she had been deceived into signing Mary's death warrant. Some have claimed that Elizabeth knew that Mary had to die. Either way, Mary was beheaded using an axe instead of the more royal method of a sword. After the beheading the executioner lifted Mary's head so that all could see that she was dead.
