Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The step-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, he sailed from England in 1583 and explored the eastern coastlines of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in Canada:

Answer: Sir Humphrey Gilbert

Sir Humphrey Gilbert died on his return from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, when his ship the "Squirrel" sank near the Azores in the eastern Atlantic.
2. He led an expedition from St. Louis, Missouri in the early 19th century, in an attempt to locate the source of the Mississippi River:

Answer: Zebulon Pike

Commissioned by Louisiana governor James Wilkinson to find the source of the Mississippi River, Zebulon Pike led a 20-man expedition into Minnesota in 1805. He incorrectly identified Lake Leech as the source of the "Father of Waters." Pike later explored the mid- and southwestern United States and the Rocky Mountains. Pike's Peak in Colorado is named after him.
3. The first European known to have mapped the Texas coastline, he claimed the area now known as Texas for Spain:

Alonso Álvarez de Pineda explored the Gulf Coast from Florida to Mexico in 1519 on behalf of the Spanish governor of Jamaica.
4. He and the members of his expedition were likely the first Europeans to see the continent of North America:

Answer: Bjarni Herjulfsson

Herjulfsson and the members of his expedition saw North America after being blown off course while sailing from Iceland to Greenland in 985 A.D. There is no evidence that Herjufsson actually landed on the North American continent; however, when he returned from his voyage, he spoke of a "hilly forested land west of Greenland," a land that many historians believe is present-day Nova Scotia. Leif Ericsson would sail there and land in 1000 A.D.
5. His second expedition to the New World consisted of 17 ships and approximately 1,500 men; he discovered and named the island of Dominica during this expedition. Who was it?

6. In 1720, he began an expedition to explore the interior of the North American continent; his journey took him on a route up the St. Lawrence River, through the Great Lakes, and down the length of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico:

Answer: Pierre François-Xavier de Charlevoix

De Charlevoix later wrote that the land where the present-day Mississippi and Ohio Rivers merge would be of great strategic importance to whomever controlled it. His observation proved prophetic. A quarter century later, Britain and France clashed over control of this strategically important area, at the beginning of the French and Indian War.
7. He was the son of another famous explorer, a cartographer and navigator who was at various times employed by both England and Spain:

Answer: Sebastian Cabot

Sebastian Cabot was the son of John Cabot, who explored the Canadian coastline in 1497.
8. A former secretary to an American president, he teamed with the brother of a famous Revolutionary War hero to explore newly acquired American lands:

Answer: Meriwether Lewis

Meriwether Lewis proved himself to be one of the greatest explorers in history. He and William Clark explored over 8,000 miles of the Louisiana Territory from 1804-06. Lewis and Clark, both gifted naturalists, wrote a comprehensive multi-volume journal of their expedition.
9. He landed on the west coast of Florida in 1539 and began a three-year expedition to find gold and silver:
