Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What cabinet post did Apirana Ngata hold in 1928?

Answer: Minister of Native Affairs

A key, and sometimes controversial, campaigner and worker for land reforms, Ngata was the first Maori to complete a university degree. He first entered parliament in 1905 where he remained until 1943.
2. Which writer and historian died on March 30, 2004?

Answer: Michael King

Writer of the best-seller, "The Penguin History of New Zealand", King was tragically killed in a car crash in Maramarua, one of New Zealand's most fatal road spots.
3. Barry Crump, a writer, was a local favourite. Which one of these books did he NOT write?

Answer: The Big Season

"The Big Season" was the first published novel of acclaimed author Maurice Gee. A controversial character, Crump sure could spin a good yarn!
4. Folk hero Lance Cairns wrote himself into the annals of cricket history on 13 February 1983 by doing what?

Answer: Hitting the Aussie bowlers for six sixes.

Ah what a day! New Zealand having no chance chasing 302 when Cairns comes out and belts 52 in 25 balls, including 6 massive sixes with a one hander over square leg! Lillee, Hogg, and McLeay all got the treatment.
Belting Chappell over the backside with his bat however, would have been equally applauded!
5. "Waltzing Matilda" is Australia's unofficial national anthem. In 1986, Dave Dobbyn wrote and released what song which was a huge hit over the Tasman and had many Australians referring to it as the New Zealand unofficial national anthem?

Answer: Slice of Heaven

"Loyal" became the flagship song for the America's Cup campaign, while "Bliss" is arguably the NZ seminal rock anthem, still heard at parties everyhere (especially on New Year's Eve). However, it was "Slice of Heaven", recorded with the Herbs for the "Footrot Flats" movie, that was to become a big success in Australia for a Kiwi musician.
6. In May 1999, New Zealand had its first woman Chief Justice, the wife of building tycoon Hugh Fletcher. What is her name?

Answer: Sian Elias

She was made a Supreme Court judge of New Zealand, and her middle name is Seerpoohi.
7. Before Peter Jackson took the movie world by storm with the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, another Kiwi movie maker was gaining a profile with "Sweetie" and "An Angel At My Table". What was the really big movie that won him/her an Oscar in 1994?

Answer: The Piano

Jane Campion became only the second woman nominated for Best Director (although her win was for Original Screenplay). Oscars also went to actress Anna Paquin and American actress Holly Hunter. A good night for the ladies!
8. The world's leading rugby union nation won a World Cup in 1987. Who was the captain when the team won in that year?

Answer: David Kirk

Although Dalton was selected as captain for the 1987 campaign, an injury meant he never took the field and David Kirk took over the reins. It was, therefore, his honour to lift the trophy in 1987.
9. Which legend of the rock/pop industry wrote a song on the Dixie Chicks' 2007 Grammy nominated album, "Taking the Long Way"?

Answer: Neil Finn

He wrote "Silent House" on the album. Best known of course for "Split Enz" and "Crowded House", Finn has worked with recording artists worldwide and is widely regarded as one of the great songwriters of his generation.
10. Who entered Parliament in 1978, after successfully petitioning the High Court to overturn the election night result in which he finished second?

Answer: Winston Peters

Winston lost the seat again in 1981, but in 1984 returned as MP for Tauranga. He lost the seat in 2005 (although he had a very close call in 1999), but entered Parliament and subsequently government via the NZ First list.
11. Who shot to international stardom in 1971, starring as the Countess in "The Marriage of Figaro"?

Answer: Kiri te Kanawa

Possessing one of the world's finest soprano voices, Dame Kiri has plied her trade internationally and ranks with Pavarotti as one of opera's true mega-stars.

She was in the news in 2007 for refusing to perform with Australian legend John Farnham, after seeing video footage of his female fans throwing underwear onto the stage.
12. Soprano singer Hayley Westenra was mildly successful in her crossover to pop with what single?

Answer: Who Painted The Moon Black

Hayley was born in 1987, and is a former member of the New Zealand Royal Ballet. When she was 14 years old, she made her recording debut with a self titled album. In 2004, Hayley's crossover into pop was mildly successful when she released the album "Pure", which includes the song "Who Painted The Moon Black".
13. In 1992, who was considered the world's best amatuer golfer?

Answer: Phil Tataurangi

Tataurangi earned this accolade with his stunning performance at the Eisenhower Trophy, where he led the New Zealand team to one of the country's greatest ever sporting triumphs. Ironic then, that he should battle with injury and form, while teammate Michael Campbell would win a major and, for a brief time in 2005, be the hottest pro golfer in the world.
14. What destructive All Black has the middle name "Tali"?

Answer: Jonah Lomu

In my humble opinion, the most destructive and attacking player the game has ever seen. To achieve what he did with his health issues makes his play even more remarkable. Coming back to play top level rugby after his kidney transplant rates as one of the greatest and gutsiest comebacks of all time. Lomu was honoured in April 2007 with a "This is your life" presentation. We are unlikely to ever see a talent like that again.
15. Queen Elizabeth II is our official head of state and she is represented by a Governor-General. In 2006, the first Governor-General of Asian descent was appointed. As what though, did Anand Satyanand, first make his mark?

Answer: Judge

Interestingly he is also the first practising Roman Catholic to hold the position.
Satyanand had a very distinguised career as a district court judge and served for 10 years from 1995 as an ombudsman.
