Rebecca (or Rebekah) was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau. A servant of Abraham had met her by a well, and asked for her to go with him to marry Abraham's son, Isaac. She was barren, but once Isaac had asked the Lord to intervene, she had the twins, Jacob and Esau.

They had 'struggled together within her' (King James, Genesis 25 v 22) and the Lord had said that this was a sign of the struggle the two would have as they grew. They were to become the fathers of two nations, Israel and Edom.

Daphne du Maurier began to write 'Rebecca' in 1937, when she was in Egypt with her husband, who was in the Grenadier Guards. It is set in a famous fictitious house - Manderley - and Rebecca is the first wife of Maxim de Winter. He marries the narrator of the story, then the tale of Rebecca comes to light.

The book was made into a movie, starring Laurence Olivier as Maxim and Joan Fontaine as the second Mrs. de Winter.

When she was 18 she became a Christian and took the name Rebecca at her baptism. She married John Rolfe, a settler, and died in 1617, after travelling to England with him.
