Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'He always loved me the best.' Which Queen Consort of Great Britain said this about her husband?

Answer: Alexandra of Denmark

Alexandra ('Alix') was born in 1844, the daughter of Christian IX of Denmark and his wife, Louise of Hesse-Kassel. She married Albert Edward ('Bertie'), Prince of Wales, in 1863, and 38 years later became Queen Consort when he succeeded his mother Queen Victoria. The marriage was reasonably happy, despite Bertie's many love affairs - hence Alix's comment after his death.
2. 'You are a member of the British Royal Family: we are never tired and we all love hospitals.' Who coined this apt quote?

Answer: Queen Mary (1867-1953)

Queen Mary, the wife of George V, was born Princess Victoria Mary of Teck in 1867, her mother being Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, a granddaughter of George III. Throughout her very long life, Queen Mary showed an admirable devotion to her duty and was a solid support for her husband. This quote reveals her humourous side.
3. 'I shall be an autocrat; that's my trade, and the good God will forgive me; that is his.' Which famous royal lady said this?

Answer: Catherine II 'the Great' of Russia

A phrase very typical of Catherine, who was born Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, and ended up ruling Russia for 34 years!
4. When Queen Mary lectured a daughter-in-law who was wearing nail varnish: 'The King does not like painted nails', her daughter-in-law replied: 'Your George might not, but mine does.' Which daughter-in-law was it?

Answer: Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark

Marina was born in 1906 to Prince Nicholas of Greece. She was a distant cousin to King George V, and married his son George, Duke of Kent in 1934. Marina was a pretty, lively personality, who sadly died of a brain tumour in 1968.
5. 'Princess Anne is very outdoorsy. She loves nature, in spite of what it has done to her.' Which famous actress said this of the Princess Royal, daughter of Elizabeth II?

Answer: Bette Middler

I wonder what Anne thought about that!
6. 'The Crown is not my right and pleaseth me not. The Lady Mary is the rightful heir'. Who said this?

Answer: Lady Jane Grey

Jane, born in 1537 to Lady Frances Brandon and Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, was the Protestant great-granddaughter of Henry VII. When Edward VI was dying, his protector, the Duke of Northumberland, convinced him to name Jane his heiress over his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth.

The above quote was the unfortunate Jane's reaction. She reigned for nine days, before Mary Tudor rode into London on a wave of popular support. Jane was executed the following year.
7. 'It seems to me a defect in our much famed constitution, to have to part with an admirable government like Lord Salisbury's for no question of any importance, or any particular reason, merely on account of the number of votes.' Which British monarch made this observation?

Answer: Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria, always a woman who wished to have her cake and eat it too, was notoriously unconstitutional in her likes and dislikes of her ministers. Clearly, Lord Salisbury was a favourite!
8. One of George V's cousins asked him, 'George, do you love your children?' 'Of course!' snapped the King. 'Then why don't you show it?' was the exasperated reply from whom?

Answer: Princess Alice of Albany

Alice, the daughter of Queen Victoria's youngest son Prince Leopold, was also George's sister-in-law, since she married Queen Mary's brother, Prince Alexander of Teck, made Earl of Athlone in 1917. Princess Alice was Queen Victoria's longest surviving grandchild - she died in 1981 just short of her 98th birthday.
9. 'I never deny; I never contradict; I sometimes forget.' Which British Prime Minister said this of his meetings with Queen Victoria?

Answer: Benjamin Disraeli

Disraeli was a notorious flatterer, and Victoria adored him. He had written several books, and she had published her 'Leaves from my Journal of our Life in the Highlands' when he would sigh and say to her, 'We authors Ma'am, we understand these things.'
10. 'There shall be but one mistress here and no master.' Which queen made this angry exclamation?

Answer: Elizabeth I of England (1533-1603)

Elizabeth, of course, never married, and some say that she most likely died a virgin in 1603. Popular, though unconfirmed rumour says her last words were: 'All my possessions for a moment of time!'
11. 'No more tears now. I will think upon revenge.' Which monarch made this pronouncment?

Answer: Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587)

Mary Stuart shows her legendary spirit in the face of danger! She was executed on the orders of her cousin Elizabeth I in 1587.
12. 'Lately I have been living in a world which I no more understand & which has become very lonely; Ileana married, Sitta gone, Nicky banished, but I struggle on. I look beaten but am I really beaten? I was always a good fighter, you remember. But fight against one's own flesh & blood?' Which 20th Century queen said this?

Answer: Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938)

Queen Marie, born the daughter of Queen Victoria's second son the Duke of Edinburgh, was a lively, dramatic personality, but she obviously found the post war years to be very oppressive and sad.
13. 'I may be uninspiring but I'll be damned if I'm an alien!' Which King of Great Britain made this retort to H.G. Wells' criticism that his court was 'alien and uninspiring'?

Answer: George V (1865-1936)

This was a comment typical of George, who was quite a rough, unimaginative man. Still, as good a reply as any!
14. 'Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world!' Which European monarch said this?

Answer: Wilhelm II of Germany (1859-1941)

A rare example of the Kaiser's wit! Here is another: when he heard that his cousin George V, in the midst of the First World War, changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor, he joked that he was looking forward to seeing a production of 'The Merry Wives of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha'!
15. 'Has God forgotten all I have done for Him?' Which king said this?

Answer: Louis XIV of France (1638-1715)

Louis also made other statements in the same vein: 'Ah, if I were not king, I would lose my temper', 'I am the state', 'I almost had to wait' and finally, 'It is legal because I wish it.'
