Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did Frederick V become Elector of the Palatinate?

Answer: 1610

Frederick V acceded on his father's death to the rule of an electorate that included land spread across south Germany. His capital was at Heidelberg. He only truly took the reins of government in 1614, when he reached his majority.
2. What league of German states was Frederick V head of from his majority in 1614?

Answer: Protestant Union

The Protestant Union was to have an undistinguished history and Frederick's position as head of it was to bring him little joy. The rest of the states in the Union refused to aid him in 1619.
3. In 1619 Frederick certainly needed aid as he had accepted the throne of a Central European state, a state which had rejected its king - Ferdinand II, who not long after became the Holy Roman Emperor (1619). This would led to Frederick V being placed under the "Imperial ban", that is, made an outlaw of the Empire. Which state had Frederick accepted the crown of?

Answer: Bohemia

Frederick's acceptance of the Bohemian crown was one of the major reasons why the Bohemian revolt expanded into the Thirty Years' War. It was a rebellion by some of the leading grandees of Bohemia, who wanted a Protestant king. It was blatantly provocative towards the Habsburg monarchy.
4. Frederick V was given a nickname as a result of his short reign over the country that he accepted the crown of in 1619. What was this nickname?

Answer: Winter King

He was called the Winter King clearly because his rule was only a winter long. Frederick was forced to flee from his new realm, eventually leaving Central Europe completely. This was because he not only lost the crown of Bohemia but also control over the Palatinate. It was invaded by the Spanish under Spinola and the League army under Tilly.
5. Who did Frederick V marry in 1613?

Answer: Elizabeth Stuart

In marrying Elizabeth, Frederick gained himself the alliance of James I of England, 'the wisest fool in Christendom'. It was a link that would eventually bear fruit with the formation of the Hague Alliance in 1625, which had the aim of restoring Frederick to his lands.
6. What was the name of Frederick's Wittelsbach cousin, the Duke of Bavaria?

Answer: Maximilian

Maximilian, though a cousin to Frederick, was by no means his ally. They followed different denominations of Christianity and the former was jealous of the latter's status as an elector of the Empire. This jealousy would bear fruit with Maximilian's agreement to go to war against Frederick in exchange for his electoral dignity.

Answer: The Hague

Arriving in April 1621, the Stadholder of Holland, Maurice of Nassau who was Frederick's uncle received them.
8. Did Frederick V have eight children?

Answer: No

Frederick in fact had the incredible number of eleven children. Some of them went on to have distinguished careers and some unfortunately not survive beyond childhood. His third son was the Prince Rupert who aided King Charles in the English Civil War.
9. Frederick V lost his first son in tragic circumstances. What were they?

Answer: Sailing accident

Sadly a ship that Frederick and his son were travelling in was hit by another. Frederick was pulled to safety but darkness prevented the discovery of his son till morning, when it was already too late.
10. Where did Frederick die?

Answer: Mainz

Frederick V met his death in 1632, still a relatively young man at 36. His campaign to have his lands restored to him would be carried on by his son, Charles Louis, who would eventually regained the Rhenish part of the Palatinate in 1648 at the Peace of Westphalia.
