Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said: "I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth ..."?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The line comes from the "Farewell" speech" that Gehrig made at Yankee Stadium after being diagnosed with a fatal disease.
2. Who wrote about "what love can do to a gentle man born"?

Answer: Jack the Ripper

It may sound like a line from Shakespeare, but it comes from the introduction to a book that purports to be the diary of Jack the Ripper. (Many consider the book to be a forgery.)
3. Where were the words "you sockdologizing old mantrap" spoken?

Answer: In a theatre

These words were probably the last ones ever heard by President Abraham Lincoln. The lines were spoken on stage during a performance of "Our American Cousin" while Lincoln was in the audience. The line usually elicited laughter (which could cover the sound of a gunshot). (John Wilkes Booth, of course, knew the play and knew when such lines would occur.)
4. Who said that he "can now retire from politics after having "Happy Birthday" sung to me in such a sweet, wholesome way"?

Answer: John Kennedy

JFK delivered the line after a provocative singing of the song by Marilyn Monroe.
5. Who said that "nobody but me and the devil know where (the treasure) is buried"?

Answer: Blackbeard

Blackbeard is said to have uttered these words in response to a question about the location of some pirate booty. (Some have interpreted this as perhaps referring to the famous "money pit" on Oak Island.)
6. Who said "we must be on you but cannot see you"?

Answer: Amelia Earhart

Earhart's radio transmission of these words was heard by the ship, "Itasca" - shortly before she disappeared.
7. Who said that "no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public"?

Answer: H.L. Mencken

The classsic line came from the always-caustic and always-cynical Mencken.
8. Who said that the reports of his death were "greatly exaggerated"?

Answer: Mark Twain

The clever line belongs to Twain.
9. What land was said to be "situated in front of ... the Pillars of Hercules"?

Answer: Atlantis

Plato is the earliest source of information about the location (and existence) of Atlantis.
10. According to legend, who said: "had I missed with my first shot, be sure ... that my second would have found its mark."?

Answer: William Tell

The story goes that Tell, an expert with a crossbow, was ordered to shoot an apple from atop his son's head. When asked why he removed two arrows from his quiver, this was said to be his reply.
