Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kevin Mitnick (born 6th August 1963) had quite the colorful criminal record, including supplying fraudulent information to police, piracy and even a count of assisted suicide based on his involvement with the hacking of the computer of a Chicago man who shot himself after losing valuable data. This charge was later dropped on account of lack of evidence to support the claim. What was his initial charge after the F.B.I arrested him on February 15th, 1995?

Answer: Wire Fraud

The F.B.I initially charged him with wire fraud, as they were arresting him based on his phone phreaking crimes. Later on, however, they seized his computer mid-trial, and filed through his records. They discovered little Kevin had been quite the naughty boy.
2. Not only was Kevin in trouble with the police, various other companies sued him based on losses that had plagued them as a result of either their employees' information being compromised, internal servers being compromised or just generally because they believed he was leaking the secrets he accumulated to other business rivals. Which of these companies DID NOT sue Kevin Mitnick following his arrest?

Answer: Panasonic

Two well-known cellphone providers (Nokia and Motorola) crop up on that list. Of course, in Kevin's time, there wasn't much of a cellphone. But those companies were heavily into developing cordless phones, and it is thought that Kevin supplied up and coming rivals with the technology to do so.

Sun Microsystems, of Java fame, sued him for exploiting a flaw in their code, and spreading around the methods needed to others.
3. Kevin's final accumulated sentence was 5 years. He spent 8 months of that in solitary confinement, as the maximum security prison he was in feared his intelligence, and that he might, with the help of other prisoners, orchestrate a breakout. How many years of those 5 were served pre-trial?

Answer: 4

The trial ended up taking quite long, due to a number of factors. For one, the expert government employed hackers who helped catch him (John Markoff and Tsutomu Shimomura) were at odds with how they should charge him. Combine that with Mitnick's intelligence and logic, and the fact that he had a pretty darn good lawyer, and the case had the potential to drag on for quite some time.
4. The men who caught him, expert government employed hackers John Markoff and Tsutomu Shimomura, wrote a book about the ordeal afterwards, which was turned into a major motion picture by Miramax, titled _______ ?

Answer: Takedown

The book went through rough times, and 4 suits by Mitnick, claiming they produced fraudulent and irrelevant information about him. Mitnick won all four court cases, and the book took almost 3 years to write, as appropriate changes were made.
5. Kevin was notorious for being a member of a gang that popularized the use of which breakfast cereal's toy whistle as a means of hacking phones?

Answer: Cap'n Crunch

Unbeknown to Kellogg's, their Cap'n Crunch whistle was tuned to the precise frequency with which were most standard AT&T phones. After Mitnick was caught, the truth was out, and Kellogg's recalled all of their "criminal toys".
6. Another contributing factor was that Mitnick's girlfriend "blew the whistle" on Kevin, speculating that he could cause a nuclear attack by whistling into a phone. What was her name?

Answer: Suzy Thunder

A prominent female hacker herself, she and Kevin were married around 1980. When she eventually gave up hacking, she moved to Vegas, where her new occupations ranged from pro poker player to ancient coin specialist.
7. On August 20th, 2006, a group of hackers raided Kevin's webpage and defaced it with slogans and personal attacks. An investigation was started. What nationality was the group believed to be?

Answer: Pakistaini

Kevin surprisingly didn't do anything to rebut the attack for a few weeks until, on September 17th, 2006, he went on a hacking spree of several Pakistani hacker group's pages, leaving the message: "It's embarrassing to be hacked, isn't it? Nobody likes it. Your page's admin. accounts are on time lock for next week. Think twice before you mess with Mitnick.".
8. Kevin gathered many supporters due to the widespread media coverage of his arrest. Some even started movements to gain his acquittal. Who started the original "FREE KEVIN" campaign?

Answer: Emmanuel Goldstein

He never really intended for it to be so widespread, just a slogan on a promotional t-shirt for the "Takedown" movie. Little did he know it would take off and soar to all the Kevin supporters around the world.
9. Kevin has made cameo appearances in many games, citing his love for the industry as the driving factor. He has appeared as a radio show call-in in which prominent and controversial series?

Answer: Grand Theft Auto

Prominent and controversial... Just like Kevin! He was in "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories" as a caller named "Ken" on the LCFR show, "The Electron Zone." There, he complains that the FBI keeps showing up at his house and searching his hard drive, because he likes to look at "exotic" pictures as a "hobby." One of the hosts catches on to what he is saying, and reveals that Ken is looking at child porn.

He's also in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" as a caller on the WCTR show, "Area 53". In his call, he talks about how the United States' supply of nuclear missiles is under his control, and not the government's. He then goes on to reference the false accusation of him being able to launch which led to him being held in solitary confinement for 8 months. The host asks him to destroy all the other radio stations in town, to which Mitnick replies "I don't do that any more, I only use my powers for good."
10. Under his supervised release, which ended in 2003, Mitnick was banned from accessing all technology except for a landline telephone. Mitnick fought this decision in court and won, allowing him to access what piece of technology?

Answer: Internet

From the cradle to the grave... Kevin's bargain to access the Internet included him signing a clause that forbade him to hack ever again for "personal gain". He was residing in Vegas at the time with his girlfriend, living a happy and normal life. But anyone who watched CBC, CNN or any of the big news networks will remember him as the man who broke the system. Mitnick.
