Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was Ludwig born?

Answer: August 25, 1845

He was born on August 25, 1845 to his parents, Crown Prince (later King) Maximilian II and Queen Marie. He was named after his grandfather, King Ludwig I.
2. He had a younger brother. What was the younger brother's name?

Answer: Otto

After Ludwig was made to give up the throne, his younger brother, Otto, was made King. Ludwig is sometimes called the last true King of Bavaria, because Otto was known to be insane.
3. Which composer did Ludwig give his patronage to?

Answer: Wagner

He first learned about Richard Wagner when he was in his early teens. He first heard "Lohengrin," when he was 16, then he became infatuated with the composer. In one of his three castles, Neuschwanstein, there are dozens of panels that depict opera scenes from many of Wagner's operas.
4. At what age did he take the Bavarian throne?

Answer: 18

He took it at age 18 when his father, Maxamillian II died. Ludwig died at age 40, when he and his physician were found drowned in Starnberger lake. If you go to the place where he was found, you will find a cross.
5. Which of his castles has a hall of mirrors that closely resembles the hall of mirrors in Versailles?

Answer: Herrenchiemsee

This castle was built to be the Bavarian version of France's Versailles.

Neuschwanstein was the "fairy-tale" castle that many people are familiar with. Hohenschwangau is the older name of Neuschwanstein.
6. To whom was he engaged?

Answer: Princess Sophie

He was engaged, but the marriage never took place due to problems on his part.
7. What is the name of the governess who kept in contact with Ludwig despite being replaced?

Answer: Sybille Meilhaus

8. How many castles did he build?

Answer: 3

They are Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee. At the time of his death, Neuschwanstein wasn't completed. It is also said that there were plans for a fourth castle, but it was never started.
9. Which medieval figure did Ludwig identify with?

Answer: Parsifal

It's no surprise that he identified with the "Grail King", Parsifal. Wagner wrote an opera, "Parsifal" that dealt with the legend of the "Grail King" - and many of Wagner's own problems.
10. There is a computer game in which Ludwig plays an important role. Which game is it?

Answer: Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within

In this game, the player explores the Wagner/Ludwig museum, Neuschwanstein, and many other places in Germany, including Ludwig's place of death.
