Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which director made the most expensive film in 1927?

Answer: Lang

It was his masterpiece Metropolis, a tale of a futuristic city. Fritz Lang was truly a visionary!
2. Who was the last ruler of independent Hawaii?

Answer: Liliuokalani

Now the name Liliuokalani is most associated with a hotel on Waikiki beach, but she was once a great queen of the Hawaiians. People still honor her today, her statue can be found in downtown Honolulu.
3. Who was the Chinese reformer of the late 19th century recognized as one of the initiators of the Hundred Days' Reform?

Answer: Liang Qichao

Liang Qichao and Kang Youwei together convinced the emperor Guangxu that Japanese style reforms were in order if China wanted to enter the 'modern' world and confront the Western powers. Unfortunately the reforms never got off the ground, and Emperss Dowager Ci Xi had Guangxu placed under house arrest. Kang and Liang were forced to flee China.
4. Which Sumerian King actually wrote most of the laws attributed to Hammurabi?

Answer: Lipit Ishtar

Hammurabi simply codified the laws, he certainly wasn't the originator of them. It's also likely that Lipit Ishtar borrowed many of his ideas from previous generations...like literature, laws evolve over generations.
5. Who was the valiant priest that published the 'Devastation of the Indies', and fought to stop the practice of enslaving the Indians within the encomienda?

Answer: Las Casas

Las Casas wrote during the time of Columbus and some of the other early conquistadores. His impressions of Spanish rule over the native Americans were not favorable in general. Thank you for trying this quiz, I hope you were able to enjoy it!
