Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On 14 July 1789 Louis XVI wrote in his diary that 'nothing' had happened, but what significant event took place on that day?

Answer: The storming of the Bastille

The storming of the Bastille is generally taken as the start of the French Revolution. For some strange reason, this diary entry is also ascribed to George III of Great Britain for 4 July 1776, but he did not keep a diary!
2. Which US President came out with this obviously bright piece of rhetoric, 'If Roosevelt was alive today, he'd turn over in his grave.'?

Answer: Dwight Eisenhower 'Ike'

Whether Ike knew it or not, he was quoting that famous misuser of the English language, Samuel Goldwyn. While the President was speaking tongue in cheek (I hope), it was recorded by history and is now attributed to both Ike and Goldwyn.
3. Which famous man's daddy came out with this less than flattering assessment of his son, 'You care for nothing but shooting, dogs, and rat catching, and you will be a disgrace to yourself and all your family.'?

Answer: Charles Darwin

Well, I guess Darwin, the Father of Evolution, proved the old boy wrong, didn't he?
4. True or False. This statement was made by the captain of the 'Titanic' before her maiden voyage? 'I cannot imagine any condition which could cause this ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that.'

Answer: True

Captain E.I. Smith also said 'I cannot conceive of any fatal disaster happening to the vessel.' Sadly, an iceberg proved Capt. Smith wrong.
5. 'Guitar music is on the way out.' Which band, or artist, was rejected by Decca Records with those words?

Answer: Beatles

In 1962, Dick Row of Decca Records in England uttered this as the Beatles were shown the door. I can safely say, I think Mr. Row lived to regret his flawed judgement, don't you?
6. Not only do our parents sometimes underestimate our potential, but teachers deflate childish egos, too. Whose teacher passed along this nonsense: 'It doesn't matter what he does, he will never amount to anything.'?

Answer: Albert Einstein

One of Einstein's teachers told this to his father in 1895. Funny, everybody and his brother knows Mr. Albert (E=MC2) Einstein's name---but nobody remembers the name of that dim bulb teacher!
7. What famous person, who should have known better, said, 'Anyone who looks for a source of power in the transformation of the atom is talking moonshine.'?

Answer: Ernest Rutherford

In 1919 (after years of experimenting) Rutherford had split the atom. His famously inaccurate quote was made in 1937. The first nuclear power plant was opened in 1954 in Obninsk, near Moscow, Russia.
8. Which hit televison show was previewed by 'Entertainment Weekly' with these words 'This show is a goner'?

Answer: The X Files

This was in 1993. Well, the viewers proved them wrong, right?
9. Who uttered these fatal words, 'Goodbye, my friends. I am off to glory.'?

Answer: Isadora Duncan

These were the last words that dancer Isadora Duncan ever spoke. She called them out to her friends as she was leaving in her sports car in Sept. 1927. Her six-foot long scarf blew back and caught under the wheel of her car breaking her neck. This isn't humorous of course --but so very ironic that I included it in my quiz.
10. Finally this quote about fools, 'Without fools the rest of us could not succeed'?

Answer: Mark Twain

This is just one of hundreds of wonderful quotes attributed to one of America's most famous authors. I hope you enjoyed this tour through the foolish. Don't you feel wiser after seeing how really foolish the wise can look?
