Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mary had four personal attendants, all called Mary. Which of these was not one of her Marys?

Answer: Mary Hamilton

The Marys were with Mary from the time she was a child until the time of her imprisonment in Lochleven Castle, where only Mary Seton accompanied her. Mary Fleming married William Maitland, one of Queen Mary's advisers.
2. Mary's allies who helped her escape from Lochleven were _________ Douglas and Willy Douglas, brothers.

Answer: George

George Douglas was probably in love with Mary, but she did not yield to his advances.
3. Who acted as regent of Scotland after Mary was forced to abdicate?

Answer: James, Earl of Moray

Moray was Mary's illegitimate half brother. He was murdered in 1570. Morton later became regent after James's two successors were also murdered.
4. Mary's third husband, the Earl of Bothwell, was divorced from his wife to marry her. What was his wife's name?

Answer: Lady Jean Gordon

Jean was not happy about being divorced and complained to her brother, Lord Huntly, who then became an enemy of Bothwell.
5. In which fashion did Mary always sign her name?

Answer: Marie R

Mary never changed her signature all her life. The reason for this is probably because she was taught to sign 'Marie' in France because that is the French form of Mary.
6. When Mary was married to Francis II of France, which of these was not one of her in-laws?

Answer: Princess Isabelle

Mary was on good terms with her sisters-in-law, but hated her mother-in-law, Catherine. Princess Elisabeth later married Philip II of Spain and Claude was married to the Duke of Lorraine.
7. Mary gave her 2nd husband several titles. Which is not one of them?

Answer: Lord Darnley

He was born with the title of Lord Darnley (It was a subsidiary title of that of his father, Earl of Lennox). Mary made him first Baron Ardmannoch, then Earl of Ross, then Duke of Albany, and finally King of Scots. The purpose of this was to make Darnley seem to have a rank suitable to marry a queen.
8. During what years was Mary queen-consort of France?

Answer: 1559-1560

Mary's husband, Francis II, died young and she went back to Scotland soon after. Mary's time as Queen of France was probably the happiest time of her life.
9. Mary was a Catholic, but practiced tolerance in Scotland.

Answer: True

Mary's mother Marie de Guise came from one of the greatest Catholic families in France and naturally wanted her daughter to be brought up in the same fate. Mary was taught to be a Catholic in France along with her sisters-in-law, Princesses Claude and Elisabeth and her husband Francis II.
10. When Mary arrived back in Scotland from France, she wanted to meet her 2nd cousin Elizabeth I of England, but Elizabeth pulled out at the last minute.

Answer: True

The two never met, which is a pity considering that Elizabeth might have been taken in by Mary's great personal charm and might not have ordered her execution (which she put off doing for 19 years!)
