Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Pope asked Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?

Answer: Pope Julius II della Rovere

Michelangelo was commissioned in 1505. Michelangelo claimed that the responsibility for his appointment was due to jealousy on the part of his rival Raphael. By commissioning Michelangelo to complete the work in a medium that he was unfamiliar with, it would diminish Michelangelo's reputation and enhance Raphael's. This suggestion lacks substance according to historians.
2. What year did Michelangelo begin painting the ceiling of the Sistine chapel?

Answer: 1508

The ceiling was completed in 1512. Michelangelo's final design was considerably different to the commissioned work, which had originally been conceived as being set against a starry sky.
3. During what years did Michelangelo live?

Answer: 1475-1564

Though many of his best known sculptures were completed before he turned 30, Michelangelo lived to, for the time, the remarkable age of 88. His final project was to oversee the building of St Peter's Basilica in Rome. The project was completed after his death.
4. Michelangelo began painting "Battle of Cascina" while working on which sculpture?

Answer: David

The painting, depicting a battle between the armies of Florence and Pisa, was never completed although a cartoon sketch of it was. The cartoon is now lost, believed to have been destroyed by a jealous rival, but copies of it by other artists still exist.
5. Where was the painting of "Battle of Cascina" to be placed?

Answer: In the Sala dei Cinquecento

It was intended to be a fresco on the wall of the Sala dei Cinquecento with the facing wall to contain a fresco of the Battle of Anghiari painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Like Michelangelo's cartoon, Leonardo's fresco is also lost.
6. What was the one statue that Michelangelo carved his name on?

Answer: The Rome Pieta

The signature was carved across the sash around Mary's breast in response to claims that it was not Michelangelo's work. Michelangelo regretted doing so and swore to never display his pride in a similar way again.
7. Where was Michelangelo's statue of Moses placed?

Answer: The Tomb of Pope Julius II

Michelangelo worked on the tomb for more than 40 years and never finished the work as he intended to, due to the constant interference of Julius.
