Marjorie Joyner was the grandaughter of a slave owner and a slave. In 1912 she began studying cosmetology and later worked for Madam C.J. Walker where she devised a machine which could straighten hair.
2. Which famous actress invented a frequency-switching system for torpedo guidance in 1942?

Answer: Hedy Lamarr

Though known mainly for her acting in the 1930s and 1940s, Hedy Lamarr also co-invented an early form of communications technology in June 1941 which was a key to modern wireless communication.
3. Who is the woman who first helped uplift all of her gender with the invention of the modern brassiere in 1889?

Answer: Herminie Cadolle

The bra was invented and popularized by the Paris couturier Heminie Cadolle, and became a hit among wealthy Europeans at the Great Exposition of 1900. The incorrect choices were also involved in the evolution of this undergarment.
4. Which African-American was the first to receive a patent granted to a woman in her own name?

Answer: Mary Dixon Kies

Mary Kies was granted a patent on May 5, 1809 for a technique of weaving straw with silk and thread. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in her attempts to profit from her invention and died penniless in Brooklyn, New York in 1837.
5. Marie Curie, the physicist and chemist, is credited with the discovery of radium and which other element?

Answer: Polonium

Marie Sklodowska Curie was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity and the first person honored with two Nobel prizes (1903 and 1911). She named the first new chemical element she discovered (1898) "polonium", for her native country of Poland.
6. Who was the woman who re-invented food production by inventing vacuum packed canning to preserve food in 1873?

Answer: Amanda Theodosia Jones

She also invented a vacuum process for drying food. All the incorrect choices were also involved in developing various food processing devices.
7. Who was the inventor of the windshield wiper blade, patented in 1903?

Answer: Mary Anderson

Anderson was granted her first patent for an automatic window cleaning device controlled inside the car. After the patent expired in 1920, windshield wipers using Anderson's basic design became standard equipment.

Note: This pre-dated Robert Kearns' invention of the intermittent windshield wiper systems used on cars from 1969 onwards.
8. What is the name of the secretary who used her own kitchen blender to mix up her first batch of "liquid paper" in 1956?

Answer: Bette Nesmith Graham

She used a white water-based tempera paint to cover her typing errors and called it "Mistake Out". She refined the product, renamed it "Liquid Paper", and had it patented in 1958.

(Yes, she is the mother of Michael Nesmith of the Monkees.)
9. In a sweeter vein, who invented the chocolate chip cookie?

Answer: Ruth Wakefield

In 1930, Ruth was baking a batch of cookies for the guests of her Toll House Inn when she discovered she was out of baker's chocolate. She substituted broken pieces of Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate expecting it to melt into the dough to create chocolate cookies. This didn't happen, and so the chocolate chip cookie was accidentally invented.
10. Who co-founded the toy company Mattel and also designed that American cultural icon known as the "Barbie" doll in 1959?

Answer: Ruth Handler

Ruth's husband, Elliott Handler and his partner Harold "Matt" Matson formed a small company to manufacture picture frames. They called it Mattel (combining part of their names) and went on to make dollhouse furniture and, ultimately, into toy manufacturing.
The doll was, of course, named for Ruth's daughter, Barbara and was followed by the "Ken" doll, named for Ruth's son.
