Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alice Hathaway Lee was the first wife of a US president and also the mother of his daughter (also called Alice). She died in 1884. OK! I'll make it easier, his second wife was Edith Kermit Carow. Who was he?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

After the death of his first wife (Alice), whom he married in 1861, Theodore Roosevelt wrote a private tribute to her which ended with the words "And when my heart's dearest died, the light went from my life forever". After this he did not speak of her either privately or in public, and she was not even mentioned in his autobiography.

In 1886 he married Edith and fathered 5 children.
2. Margaret Thatcher became the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1979. She married in 1951, can you tell me her husband's first name?

Answer: Denis

The Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher, married Denis in 1951, a marriage which lasted until his death in 2003.
3. Catherine Parr was Henry VIII's sixth wife. What is not commonly known, though, is that she had married before. How many times was she married before she married Henry VIII?

Answer: 2

Catherine married Edward Brough in 1529 at the age of 17 but he died in 1533.
Her second marriage was to John Neville, (3rd Baron Latymer of Snape, North Yorkshire) in 1534 and this lasted until his death in 1543. Catherine married Henry VIII in 1543 and within 6 months of his death, in 1547, she married Thomas Seymour.
4. Lucille Ball appeared in 'I Love Lucy' in the 1950s. Her co-star and on-screen husband was Desi Arnaz, but who was she married to at the time?

Answer: Desi Arnaz

Lucille and Desi eloped in 1940 and they divorced in 1960.
5. You take a member of the 'Spice Girls', Victoria, she marries somebody called David and takes the surname (family name) 'Beckham'. What was her husband's profession at the time?

Answer: Footballer

I make no comment on the abilities of either in their chosen professions, suffice to say that Victoria Adams (known as 'Posh Spice') married David Beckham on the 4th July 1999.
6. My name was Heather Mills, after separating from my husband in May 2006 the British tabloid press gave me the name 'Mucca'. Who was I married to?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills met in 1999 and were married in 2006. They divorced in 2008 after a well publicised and acrimonious divorce hearing.
7. Who is the famous husband of Camilla Parker Bowles whom she married in April 2005?

Answer: King Charles III

Originally Charles and Camilla were to have been married in Windsor Castle on 8th April 2005 but, due to legal problems, the venue was changed. (If they had been allowed to marry in the castle it would, under British law, have meant that the castle would have had to have been made available to everybody for civil marriages).

They were married at the Windsor Guildhall. The marriage was delayed for one day due to the funeral of Pope John Paul II, which Charles attended as representative of Queen Elizabeth II.
8. Marilyn Monroe, blonde sexbomb of the 1950s, was married a number of times but who was her last husband?

Answer: Arthur Miller

James Dougherty was her first husband, married in 1942, they divorced in 1946.

Joe DiMaggio married Marilyn in January 1954, Marilyn filed for divorce 274 days later in September 1954. When Marilyn died in 1962 it was DiMaggio who claimed the body and had half a dozen roses delivered to her crypt three times a week for the next 20 years.

Arthur Miller. Married in 1956 this was Marilyn's third and final marriage, this lasted until January 1961.

Even though there were many rumours concerning Marilyn and the Kennedys she was never married to any of them.
9. My name was Graça Machel. Which world famous politician did I marry on the occasion of his 80th birthday?

Answer: Nelson Mandela

After the break-up of his first marriage to Evelyn Ntoko Mase, Nelson Mandela married Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in 1957. Although their marriage lasted throughout Nelson's incarceration they were divorced in 1996 due to Winnie's alleged infidelity.
In 1998 Nelson married his third wife, Graça Machel.
10. No quiz with the title 'My Husband and I' could be complete without a question about HM Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband is Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Where was he born?

Answer: Corfu - Greece

Known colloquially as 'Phil the Greek', Prince Philip was born on the island of Corfu as 'Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark'. After World War II he renounced these titles, changed his surname to Mountbatten (after his maternal grandparents) and used the title "Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten". He married the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947.
