Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The first rule is not to lose. The second rule is not to forget the first rule." Who made this saying famous?

Answer: Warren Buffett

Business magnate and well known economist, Warren Buffett was the person who made this quote famous. While he was never into major athletics, losing to him referred to making poor decisions in business. He made his billions investing on Wall Street, taking chances and going for the "win." To lose, for him, meant going broke.
The other three options had great quotes about winning, but did not utter this phrase, at least not first.
2. "Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive." Who said it first?

Answer: Elbert Hubbard

While the quote gained notoriety when Ryan Reynold's uttered a variation of it in the film "Van Wilder," it was in fact Elbert Hubbard who said it first. Hubbard, a writer and artist, had twelve novels published prior to his death in 1915. He is often quoted for light-hearted sayings about life.
3. ... "if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best." What feisty film star uttered this phrase?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was known more for her beauty than her acting ability, more for her alleged affair with President Kennedy than her brains, but she still managed to be very deep on occasions. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, the actress lived a life of luxury after moving to Hollywood and becoming a star.

She was once married to Joe Dimaggio, and had that alleged affair with John F. Kennedy. She died at 36-years-old in 1962.
4. "Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow." Who said it first?

Answer: Helen Keller

Keller was both blind and deaf from age 19 months, yet still fought hard to become an advocate for her people. She was the first deaf-blind person to ever earn a college degree in the United States. She became an author and lecturer during her nearly 88 years. Keller has served as an inspiration for millions through her advocacy and work.
5. "A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life." Who was contemplating life when he said these words?

Answer: Muhammad Ali

Known more for his quick wit and one-liners than for as one with deep thoughts, this quote did come from the mouth of Muhammad Ali. Ali, a multiple time world heavyweight boxing champion, was a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War. He went so far as to give up his boxing license and the championship to avoid fighting in the war. Later in life the man developed Parkinson's Disease, among other health conditions, that kept him from making public appearances.
6. "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal." This by which man, who also invented the modern assembly line for automobiles?

Answer: Henry Ford

Henry Ford employed more than 100,000 workers in Dearborn and Detroit, Michigan in his company's heyday. His ideas revolutionized manufacturing. He took ideas seen in slaughter houses and made them work in a factory, bringing the work to the worker, instead of the other way around. In 2015 the Rouge Manufacturing Plant could build 61 vehicles an hour when running at full capacity.
7. "If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." Who was the motivational speaker behind this quote?

Answer: Milton Berle

Actor and comedian Milton Burle uttered these words. Berle started his career in silent films at age 5, and worked through radio, television and movies until 2000. He died in 2002 at age 93. He was one of the first seven inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
8. "The only way to have a friend is to be one." Who said these words?

Answer: Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of the leading transcendentalist writers of all time. Emerson's poetry is considered to be some of the best written about nature and being one's self. His 1836 essay "Nature," is widely considered the birth of the entire transcendentalist movement.
9. "I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love." The quote here was spoken by which well-known missionary?

Answer: Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, or Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, was a Roman Catholic nun who was one of the world's most well known missionaries. She worked for decades on making the world a better place for those that live in it. Her many charitable works made her world famous, but detractors focused on substandard conditions in hospitals that she helped to set up and run in the third world nations.
10. "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do." What technology magnate is quoted here?

Answer: Steve Jobs

Apple founder Steve Jobs devoted much of his life to motivational speaking after he built his company into a multi-billion dollar corporation. He was on the cutting edge of technology in the 1980s, nearly bankrupted in the early 1990s and rebounded to one of the biggest technology giants in the world by the early 2000s.
