1. Which jeweller did Rene Lalique serve an apprenticeship under?

In 1876 (at age 16) Lalique began an apprenticeship with the famous jeweller Louis Aucoc. Rene's father had died and it was thought best that he learn a trade. He attended the College of Decorative Arts in Paris at the same time. Rene had shown artistic talent at an early age when he won an award for a drawing he did at age 12.

Lalique was just 25 and had already studied sculpture and had experience in designing textiles and wallpaper. In 1890 he already employed 30 staff who worked on his classic Art Nouveau jewellery.

The 'R' of course, stood for Rene. Post 1945, pieces just have the name Lalique etched onto them - designers have included his son Marc and his grandaughter Marie-Claude. You are extremely lucky if you have an item marked 'R Lalique'. Be careful with it!
