Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did Wallis Warfield Simpson meet with all of the members of the royal family?

Answer: at the wedding of the Duke of Kent

Queen Mary refused to have anything to do with Simpson, who she referred to as The Adventuress. However, the Prince of Wales showed up at his brother, the Duke of Kent's, wedding with Simpson, who he introduced as 'his great friend.'
2. Who is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England?

Answer: the Queen or King

The Queen is considered the temporal governor of the church, since one of the rites of coronation is to be the 'defender of the faith.' The Archbishop of Canturbury is the spiritual leader of the church, and is appointed to that post by the monarch.
3. Who did the royal family refer to as the 'Bahamas Mama'?

Answer: Princess Diana

In February, 1982, the Prince and Princess of Wales vacationed in the Bahamas. Diana, six months pregnant, had her picture taken by the paparrazzi wearing a bikini. After the photo was published, Diana was known as the 'Bahamas Mama'.
4. Why did the marriage of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones fail (according to Princess Margaret)?

Answer: she alleged he is homosexual

Princess Margaret accused Jones of being gay. In fact, when asked, 'How is the Queen?', her standard answer was, 'Do you mean my sister or my husband?' OUCH!
5. What position was given to the Duke of Windsor (the former Edward VIII) four years after his abdication in 1940?

Answer: Governor of the Bahamas

Rumours that the Duke was a supporter of Hitler meant that, after a brief spell with the British Military Mission in France, he was sent as far away as possible during WWII. He became Governor of the Bahamas.
6. The royal family had a very unfavorable impression of President Jimmy Carter. Why?

Answer: he was considered 'too forward'

The Queen Mother had an active dislike for Jimmy who, when introduced to her, kissed her full on the lips. Rules of royal protocol state that you don't speak until spoken to when meeting a royal, much less kiss them. The Queen Mother's reaction? 'He is the only man since my dear husband died to kiss me on the lips!'
7. Which British monarch bought Buckingham Palace?

Answer: George III

George III purchased Buck House from the Duke of Buckingham and added a few rooms, but it was during the reign of Victoria that the palace that we see today was created.
8. Which was the residence of the Queen Mother?

Answer: Clarence House

Given to Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip after their marriage in 1947, Clarence House was occupied by the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret when Elizabeth became Queen. The Queen Mother lived there ever since.
9. Marion Crawford ('Crawfie') was the governess of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, and was deeply loved by all members of the royal family. Then she did something that caused the royal family never to speak to her again. What did she do?

Answer: wrote a book about her life with the royal family

Crawfie violated the royal protocol by writing a book, 'The Little Princesses' and writing a weekly column about the royal family in the magazine 'Woman's Own'. After receiving a very generous pension and a grace-and-favor residence (in other words free) upon her retirement, she was never spoken to again after the book was published.
10. Which member of the royal family was known as 'Fog'?

Answer: Mark Phillips

Mark Phillips was known as 'Fog' because he was thought to be thick and wet, and not too intelligent. Nasty bunch, those royals!
