Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the real name of American outlaw Butch Cassidy?

Answer: Robert LeRoy Parker

Butch Cassidy (1866-1908) was infamous throughout the American Wild West. He was leader of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang before being widely believed to have been killed in Bolivia in 1908.
2. What was the real name of English novelist George Eliot?

Answer: Mary Anne Evans

Evans (1819 -1880) chose her male pen-name in 1857 to ensure that her novels would be taken seriously by the public, in an era when female novelists were still frowned upon. She is best known for her novels 'Adam Bede', 'The Mill on the Floss' and 'Silas Marner'.
3. 'The Queen of Crime', Agatha Christie, wrote a series of romantic novels under which pseudonym?

Answer: Mary Westmacott

Christie (1890-1976) is most famous for her 80 detective novels featuring well-known characters such as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. She chose the pseudonym Mary Westmacott when writing her lesser-known romantic novels.
4. English novelist George Orwell, most famous for '1984' and 'Animal Farm', was actually called what?

Answer: Eric Blair

Orwell (1903-50) chose his pseudonym when he published his first novel, 'Down and Out in Paris and London'. He felt uncomfortable with using his real name, and continued to use the name Orwell when publishing his later works.
5. British musician Elton John was born under what name?

Answer: Reginald Kenneth Dwight

Dwight was born in England in 1947. Like many musicians, he chose a stage name to work under. 'Elton John' is certainly a bit more showbiz than 'Reginald Kenneth Dwight'!
6. American Children's author Lemony Snicket, famous for his 'Series of Unfortunate Events', is a pen-name of whom?

Answer: Daniel Handler

Although Handler has used his real name for some of his works, others (notably 'A Series of Unfortunate Events') were written under his chosen pseudonym. He has since appeared in public under his real name, often claiming to be the agent or representative of Lemony Snicket.
7. Pope Benedict XVI was born with what name?

Answer: Joseph Alois Ratzinger

The Pope (born 1927 in Bavaria, Germany) chose to be named after Pope Benedict XV, who held office during the First World War. Papal tradition states that popes choose a new name when elected as pope, usually taken from an admired previous pope.
8. WWI German fighter pilot The Red Baron was actually called what?

Answer: Manfred von Richthofen

Von Richthofen (1892-1918) was the most successful German fighter pilot of World War One, winning at least 80 victories. His nickname, given by the French, British and German troops, was derived from the colour of his famous triplane.
9. What was the actual first name of English landscape architect "Capability" Brown?

Answer: Lancelot

Capability Brown (1716-83) designed over 170 parks and gardens throughout his lifetime. His nickname derived from his habitual use of the word, telling his clients that their gardens had great "capability" for improvement.
10. And finally, the great Woody Allen was an alias of whom?

Answer: Allen Stewart Konigsberg

Konigsberg (born 1935) is (amongst other things) an American actor, musician and comedian of German-Jewish descent. As a keen jazz musician, he took his stage name from clarinettist Woody Herman.
