Wordsworth was born in the small town of Cockermouth, in the north of the Lake District, in 1770. Most of his early years were spent there or in Penrith a few miles away. He died in 1850 after contracting a cold after going on a country walk. Many thousands of tourists visit his grave every year in the grounds of St Oswald's Church, Grasmere.
