Answer: September 10, 1977

Holly Maddux had left Fire Island on September 9, 1977. She was living with her new boyfriend, Saul Lapidus, in New York when Ira Einhorn called her. Einhorn demanded Holly to come back to Philadelphia or he'd throw all of her personal belongings out in the rain. Holly immediately left for Philadelphia. She was never seen alive again.
2. In what area of Philadelphia did the murder take place?

Answer: Powelton Village

Powelton Village is home to the University of Pennsylvania. During the 1970's, Powelton Village was not a high crime area, it was too collegiate for that. When the murder of Holly Maddux came out in 1979, and when everyone realized that Ira Einhorn committed the murder, the citizens of Powelton were shocked.
3. Two weeks after Holly disappeared, her family realized that something was terribly wrong. When her father questioned Einhorn about Holly's disappearance, what did he say?

Answer: That she went to the store and never returned

When the Maddux family were finally able to talk to Einhorn, they asked him about Holly's disappearance. Einhorn explained that she had gone out a couple of weeks previously to the neighborhood co-op to buy some tofu and sprouts. He added that since that time he had not seen or spoke to her.
4. Who was the detective in charge of the case?

Answer: Detective Chitwood

Detective Michael Chitwood was the lead detective in charge of the case. The Madduxes' private investigator had told Chitwood everything he knew about the disappearance of Holly, but there was nothing Chitwood could do, his hands were tied. Finally, in 1979, evidence came to Chitwood, and he was able to get a search warrant for Einhorn's apartment. Once inside the apartment, he noticed a foul stench.

When he broke the padlock on the closet he found a trunk, and when he looked inside he saw the remains of Holly Maddux.

The evidence he collected that day have remained with the police in the hope that it could be used against Einhorn.
5. When was the body of Holly found?

Answer: March 28, 1979

On March 28, 1979 at 9:00 A.M., the Philadelphia police went to Einhorn's apartment, armed with a search warrant. Upon entering the apartment they noticed a horrible stench. They immediately began searching and collecting evidence. While this was happening, Einhorn sat on his sofa, watching every move they made.

When the police came upon the padlocked closet, they asked Einhorn if he had a key and he said, 'No I don't, it was lost'. The police then brought out a camera, and photographed Chitwood breaking the lock.

Inside the walk-in closet, Chitwood found piece after piece of damaging evidence. He found Holly's suitcase fully packed and her purse, which contained her driver's license and social security card. Chitwood then came upon a padlocked trunk.

The police photographed that it was locked and photographed that Chitwood broke it. Donning rubber gloves, he opened the trunk. Inside was old newspapers dating back to 1977 and old, faded plastic Sears bags. Underneath all of this trash, Chitwood came upon a mummified human hand.

As one newspaper said, 'If one didn't know better, one would assume that they were trying St. Peter, for all the reputation-boosting testimony that was communicated from corporate executives, columnists, a minister, and other high-caliber profiles'.

The judge set the bail for {$40,000.00,} and Einhorn only had to pay {$4,000.00} to be released. Einhorn's bail was paid for by Barbara Bronfman, a Montreal socialite who had married into the Seagram distillery family and met Einhorn through a common interest in the paranormal.

In 1993, the Philadelphian judicial system conducted such a trial, an acceptable American procedure after a suspect flees the country and refuses to return after an ordained period of time.

The trial was held as a normal murder trial, with a judge, a full jury, witnesses, evidence and a legal team, but without the suspect or a defense counsel. At its conclusion, Einhorn had been convicted and given the death sentence for the murder of Holly Maddux, the said verdict to be carried out upon his return to America.
