Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which tennis player was renowned for his flamboyant hairstyle, until confessing many years later that it was a wig and that he had actually lost his own hair?

Answer: Andre Agassi

The confession came in Agassi's autobiography, which came out in 2009. The wig was a masterpiece - long and shaggy with highlights, and held on (it now seems) by a headband. Agassi claimed in his book that he lost his first major final, the French Open, in 1990 through his fear that his hair would fall off during the match.

It doesn't seem to have hindered him that much, though, as he has eight Grand Slam singles titles to his credit, having won at all four of the major venues.
2. Sir Ben Kingsley, another man with no hair on his head, was born as Krishna Pandit Bhanji in which country?

Answer: England

Kingsley was born in Yorkshire in 1943 to a family of rather exotic descent. His paternal grandfather was Indian, but moved to Zanzibar in Africa, while Kingsley's father was born in Kenya. Sir Ben won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of another bald man in the film 'Gandhi', which came out in 1982.

His other major films include 'Schindler's List' (1993), 'Bugsy' (1991) and 'Sexy Beast' (2000).
3. Mikhail Gorbachev, well known for his lack of hair and birthmark, was the last president of the Soviet Union, before its break-up. His wife was also prominent in public life. What was her first name?

Answer: Raisa

Although the wives of western political leaders often find themselves in the public eye, this was less common for the wives of Communist leaders. Raisa Gorbacheva made regular public appearances alongside her husband, having left her post as a university lecturer when he became leader of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev's birthmark, revealed by his lack of hair, was very noticeable but he should be remembered for being the man who introduced the policies of glasnost and perestroika.

The new openness led to the dissolution of the USSR with the former members gaining their independence.
4. The London born, and bald, Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel first came to public attention as a singer in the 1990s under which name?

Answer: Seal

Seal was born to a Nigerian mother and his middle names reflect his heritage. His best known hit is probably 'Kiss From a Rose' from 1994, and he was also the featured vocalist on 'Killer', a 1990 hit from dance music producer Adamski. Lemmy comes from the heavy metal band Motorhead, where long hair is compulsory. Sting was born in Tyne and Wear and Adamski was born in Hampshire.
5. Pierluigi Collina was almost as well known for being bald as for being a referee in which sport?

Answer: Soccer

Collina is a retired soccer referee from Italy. His bald head, caused by alopecia, made him stand out, but he was also one of the best referees in the sport. Collina was voted the World's Best Referee for each year between 1998 and 2003 and was also his country's Referee of the Year on several occasions.

He was the referee for the FIFA World Cup final between Germany and Brazil in 2002, which was played in Japan and which was won by Brazil.
6. Which of these people, who often worked with David Walliams, lost his hair at the age of six due to alopecia?

Answer: Matt Lucas

Matt Lucas and David Walliams worked together on the television series 'Little Britain', creating various characters such as Marjorie Dawes, who runs a weight loss class despite being overweight herself, and Lou and Andy. Matt has given various explanations regarding his hair loss, although they all relate to alopecia. His other work includes working with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer on 'Shooting Stars' and he has also played the part of Thenardier in 'Les Miserables'.

The other men listed are associated with a different sketch show - 'The Fast Show'.
7. Describing himself as 'a fat, bald bloke', Gregg Wallace is primarily associated with which type of reality television show?

Answer: Cookery

Gregg Wallace, usually in partnership with chef John Torode, is known as a presenter of 'Masterchef' and its various spin-offs. He began as a greengrocer at Covent Garden market, before breaking into radio and then television. 'Masterchef' is a competition between amateur cooks who create dishes under pressure.

The results are then judged by Gregg and John, with Gregg claiming to be particularly fond of the puddings (desserts). Spin-offs include a celebrity version, one for professionals and another for young cooks. Gregg has also made appearances in other celebrity shows, including 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
8. Being bald is, it seems, not an asset to a politician. Which leader of the Conservative Party resigned in 2001 after losing the General Election to Tony Blair?

Answer: William Hague

Hague first made his mark in politics when he spoke at the Conservative Party's conference in 1977. At the time he was aged only sixteen and had a full head of blond hair. After the Conservatives, under John Major, lost power in the 1997 election, Hague was elected the party's new leader.

He was derided in the popular press for his lack of hair and for wearing a baseball cap. Being bald didn't seem to be a handicap to Winston Churchill, but maybe we live in a more superficial age.
9. One man who has spent more than most on covering up his loss of hair is Elton John. Among his many achievements is the writing of the songs for 'The Lion King' in collaboration with which of these?

Answer: Tim Rice

The songs the pair wrote for 'The Lion King' include 'Circle of Life', 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?' and 'I Just Can't Wait to be King'. They also worked together on 'Aida', with Elton providing the music and Tim the lyrics. Elton has, of course, had huge success around the world with his solo work, with his first album being released in 1969. His attempts to disguise his lack of hair include various wigs, hats and hair transplants.

The other men listed as options are all partners of Tim Rice in various musical productions. The best known, and most productive, partnership is that with Andrew Lloyd Webber.
10. Sir Patrick Stewart, another bald actor, appeared in several of the 'X-Men' film series in which role?

Answer: Charles Xavier

The character was better known as Professor X, and Stewart played the role on many occasions. He is also well known on television screens for his portrayal of Jean-Luc Picard in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. Stewart is also an accomplished stage actor, and worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company for many years.

The other characters listed are better known as Wolverine (Howlett), normally played by Hugh Jackman. Summers is Cyclops, played by James Marsden in the first three films. Erik Lehnsherr is Magneto, portrayed by another English knight, Sir Ian McKellen in several films, and also by Michael Fassbender.
