3. This one is an al fresco party: guests are sitting about under the trees while a string quartet is playing music by Rossini. Some people are enjoying a fondue and others are nibbling at cheese platters. Everyone is sipping apple juice. Your host has a bow in his hand and a quiverful of bolts over his shoulder. He is trying to persuade some of the guests to let him shoot an apple off their heads. Whose party are you attending?

Answer: William Tell

William Tell was a 15th century Swiss folk hero, who shot an apple off the head of his son, at the behest of the tyrant who was oppressing his people. The overture to Rossini's opera "William Tell" is one of the most popular and frequently performed pieces of classical music. Swiss cheeses and fondue are central to the cuisine of the region.
4. You are handed a glass of Chateau Margaux. You notice a gun cabinet containing shotguns and hunting rifles. On the coffee table are a couple of first editions of his novels, autographed by your host. What name has he written in them?

Answer: Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway was a keen big game hunter. Red wine was reputedly his favourite tipple - one of his granddaughters was even named Margaux.
5. The party is being held in an artist's studio. Your host tells his model, who is wearing a turban, that she can drop the pose and join the party, but asks her to take off his wife's pearl earring and give it to him for safekeeping. You realise you are privileged to be having a Jenever with which artist?

Answer: Johannes Vermeer

The juniper berry-flavoured tradional liquor Jenever (known as Dutch Gin) has been popular in the Netherlands since the seventeenth century. Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) would undoubtedly have served it at a party! "Girl with a Pearl Earring" is one of his most famous paintings and has been the subject of a best-selling novel by Tracy Chevalier and an award-winning film starring Colin Firth as the painter.
6. Your host removes a golf club from the coffee table to make room for the punch bowl. He casually remarks: "I hit two golf balls on the moon with that club. They're still there!" You realise that you are talking to which astronaut?

Answer: Alan Shepard

Alan Shepard took the golf balls and a six-iron with him to the moon, but golf was not the only sport to be played on the lunar surface. Edgar Mitchell threw a javelin, which is also still there.
7. You are a teetotaller, so you ask if it is possible to have tea instead of a beer. Your host obligingly hands you a cup of Earl Grey. As you add some sugar, you notice that the spoon is bent. You realise that you are a guest of which "magical" entertainer?

Answer: Uri Geller

Psychokinetic spoon-bending was the trademark illusion of Israeli conjurer and illusionist Uri Geller. He was frequently seen on television.
8. You notice with some misgiving that your host already seems somewhat glassy-eyed and unsteady on his feet, even though the party has scarcely begun. He tells you he is a painter and proudly shows you a canvas with drips and splashes of paint all over it. He insists on making you a present of the "picture". On the way home, you throw it into a dumpster. Beeeg mistake! You could be a millionaire now if you had only kept whose work?

Answer: Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock suffered from chronic alcoholism, which led to his death when he crashed his car while driving under the influence. His nickname of "Jack the Dripper" referred to his method of painting by dripping and sloshing paint on to canvas laid out on the floor.

His paintings, which he mostly titled with numbers, fetch very high prices - in 2016 billionaire art collector David Geffen sold "Number 17A" to hedge fund manager Kenneth Griffin for $200 million.
9. Your hostess notices you looking at a framed Nobel Prize medal and citation hanging on the wall. "I won the prize for discovering this! It's called radium. Isn't it pretty?" she says, taking a glass test tube out of her pocket. In the tube you see a blue-green fluorescent substance. It is indeed very pretty. Who is your distinguished hostess?

Answer: Marie Curie

Marie Curie, not realising the danger, habitually carried a tube of radium around in her pocket to show to people, because its shining turquoise colour was so pretty. The prolonged presence of the radio-active substance next to her body eventually caused the cancer of which she died.

Not only was she the first woman to win a Nobel Prize (Physics 1903), but she was the first person to win two of them (Chemistry 1911).
10. Your host is wearing one white sequinned glove, and he has a very peculiar way of walking: he seems to be walking forward, but he is actually moving backward, with a gliding motion. A chimpanzee named Bubbles follows him around. You realise that you are the guest of which musical superstar?

Answer: Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson did not invent the "moonwalk", forms of which have been known since Cab Calloway performed it 1932. However, it gained worldwide popularity after Michael debuted it as one of his trademark moves during a performance of "Billie Jean" in 1983. Michael acquired Bubbles the chimp as a youngster from a Texas research facility, but when the animal grew up to be an aggressive adult, he could no longer be a household pet. Jackson died on June 25, 2009.
