Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first miracle by Jesus involved producing wine, as per John 2:1-12. What substance did Jesus miraculously turn into wine?

Answer: water

John 2:1-12 provides an account of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding feast in Cana in Galilee. According to the account, the wedding hosts ran out of wine part way through the feast, when Jesus came up with a miraculous solution. He instructed the people to take six large stone waterpots and fill them with water. Shortly afterwards, the people would be amazed when they found out the waterpots were full of wine.
2. Scripture tells of Jesus raising the daughter of Jairus from the dead. According to Mark 5:22, what was Jairus' occupation?

Answer: Synagogue ruler

Jairus was a synagogue ruler. Mark 5:21-43 tells of Jesus miraculously raising Jairus' daughter from the dead. The miracle took place immediately after a woman with a bleeding problem was healed when she secretly touched the hem of Jesus' gown.

Details about the two miracles can be also found in Matthew 9:18-26 and Luke 8:40-56. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, the two miracles took place in Capernaum.
3. According to Matthew 8:14-15, what member of the original Twelve Disciples had his mother-in-law healed by Jesus?

Answer: Peter

Peter is the correct answer. Scripture is short on details, simply stating the mother of Peter's wife was in bed with a fever and when Jesus touched her hand, "the fever left her and she arose and served them." No name is given for Peter's mother-in-law and his wife.

Details of the miraculous healing can be also found in Mark 1:29-31 and Luke 4:38-39.

Going strictly by Scripture, Peter was the only one of the original Twelve Disciples who was married.
4. According to John 5:1-15, where did Jesus heal a man who had been a paralytic for thirty-eight years?

Answer: The pool of Bethesda

The miraculous healing of a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years took place at the pool of Bethesda, as per John 5:1-15. According to the passage, the pool of Bethesda was in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate and it had five porches.

Scripture states "a great multitude" of people, lame and paralyzed, would wait by the pool as an angel would stir up the water and "then whoever stepped in first... was made well of whatever disease" they had. The passage goes on to tell of Jesus seeing the paralyzed man and asking him, "Do you want to be made well?"

The paralytic answered Christ's question by stating, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me."

Jesus then commanded the man to "Rise, take up your bed and walk," and he did just that!

It must have been an amazing sight to see. It boggles the mind, but the Pharisees were outraged because the healing took place on the Sabbath.
5. According to Luke 8:26-39, where did a legion of demons go after they left a man at Gadarenes? (Some versions of the Bible, the NIV included, state Gerasenes rather than Gadarenes.)

Answer: A herd of pigs

The demons left the man at Gadarenes and entered into a herd of pigs, according to Luke 8:26-39. Verse 33 states after the demons left the man and entered the pigs, the animals "ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned."

It's interesting to note Jesus basically didn't have to do anything to heal the man of Gadarenes who was possessed by a legion of demons.

Scripture states when Jesus approached the demoniac man, the demons recognized who He was and begged for permission to enter "a herd of many swine" feeding nearby. Scripture goes on to tell of the demons entering the swine and the people who saw what had happened quickly leaving and telling others "in the city and in the country" about the incident.

The passage concludes with the demon-possessed man becoming normal; he then "went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him."
6. According to John 18:10, who had his ear severed by Peter and then restored by Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane?

Answer: Malchus

Malchus had his ear cut off by a sword wielded by Peter, according to John 18:10. The account of Malchus having his ear severed by Peter can also be found in three other places in the New Testament: Matthew 26:51, Mark 14:7 and Luke 22:50. However, Malchus and Peter are identified in only the Gospel of John.

Meanwhile, Luke is the only Gospel that tells of Jesus miraculously healing Malchus. Luke 22:49-51 gives this account of the miraculous healing: "When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, 'Lord, shall we strike with the sword?' And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus answered and said, 'Permit even this.' And He touched his ear and healed him."
7. When Jesus was performing miracles, what Old Testament prophet did He claim to be fulfilling, as per Matthew 8:17?

Answer: Isaiah

Matthew 8:17 quotes Jesus as saying He was fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah when he healed those who were sick. To put the verse in context, here's how Matthew 8:16-18 reads in the NKJV:

"When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
'He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses'."

The statement 'He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses' is from Isaiah 53:4.

The Gospel of Matthew often refers to Isaiah, pointing out Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. For further details, see
Matthew 3:3, 4:14, 12:17, 13:14 and 15:7.
8. At what community was Jesus when He ascended to heaven, as per Luke 24:50?

Answer: Bethany

Jesus was in Bethany when He ascended to heaven. Looking on at the miraculous event were eleven of the original Twelve Disciples. (Judas Iscariot had killed himself a number of days before.) Details about the ascension can be found in Luke 24:50-53.

Bethany was a village outside of Jerusalem. It was in the same community Jesus raised Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, from the dead.
9. Scripture tells of Jesus restoring the sight of Bartimaues. Near what city did the miraculous healing take place, as per Mark 10:46?

Answer: Jericho

The miracle of blind Bartimaeus regaining his sight took place at Jericho. Scripture states Jesus encountered Bartimaeus on the side of the road, begging. Not much is known about the personal life of Bartimaeus apart from the fact he was the son of Timaeus. According to Scripture, Bartimaeus received his sight immediately after he asked Jesus to perform the miracle and Jesus responded, "Go your way; your faith has made you well."

See Mark 10:46-52 for details.
10. Scripture tells of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. According to John 11:39, how many days had Lazarus been dead?

Answer: four

Lazarus had been dead for four days when he was miraculously raised from the dead by Jesus. John 11:39 tells of Jesus informing people at Lazarus' burial site to roll away the stone from the tomb. However, Martha, the sister of Lazarus, cautioned rolling the stone away might not be a good idea because the body was starting to decay and there would be a stench. She is quoted as saying, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."

Stench, or not, Lazarus was raised from the dead!

It was during this miraculous event Jesus made the famous statement: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die."
