Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Paul's first letter to Timothy, in the first chapter, he tells Timothy that he (Paul) had once been a blasphemer, among other things. How does Paul say that he was able to obtain mercy from God? (1 Timothy 1:12-16 King James Version.)

Answer: Because he had acted out of ignorance in unbelief

In the text, we see that Paul does not make excuses for his own previous actions which he now sees as wrong, but that he instead offers an explanation of God's love and mercy. He is not justifying ignorance, either. He is simply stating that God extended his mercy toward Paul in spite of what he had chosen to believe or disbelieve.
2. Who does Paul tell Timothy is the mediator between the one true God and mankind in the 2nd chapter of 1 Timothy, verses 4-8? (King James Version)

Answer: The man, Christ Jesus

According to this text, Paul is saying that God wishes for everyone to be saved from wrath and come to the knowledge of His truth. Interestingly, Paul ends this passage with the following words of encouragement and also with a warning;
"...that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting."

Paul seems to be saying that people have the ability to be holy in God's eyes by avoiding anger at their fellow men and by not doubting the Word of God, acting on its promises instead.
3. In chapter 3 of 1st Timothy, Paul specifically addressed two types of church leaders and discussed the desirable behavior traits of each one with Timothy. What were the two types of church officials that Paul spoke of? (King James Version)

Answer: bishops and deacons

Paul gives a straightforward expectation of officers of the church, both bishops and deacons, in this passage. He concludes the chapter with the following commentary about the mysteries of God, His Spirit, and His Son:
"God was MANIFEST in the flesh, JUSTIFIED in the Spirit, SEEN of the angels, PREACHED unto the Gentiles, RECEIVED up into glory." (The emphasis is mine. The quote comes from the King James Version.)
4. Paul tells Timothy that there will someday be people who will leave their faith in God and will turn to those who speak lies, to devilish doctrines, misleading spirits and legalistic taboos as the "answers" to their questions. When does Paul say that this type of behavior will occur, according to 1 Timothy 4:1-5? (King James Version)

Answer: in the latter times

Verses 1-3 of 1 Timothy 4 tell us "...that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats..." (KJV)
5. According to Paul, a widow is only to be considered as such after she has reached a certain age and has only had one husband. Other widows, younger than this age, are not to be taken care of by the church, because the probability exists that they will remarry. How old does Paul tell Timothy that a widow must be in order for the church to be obligated to help her, according to 1 Timothy 5:3-16? (King James Version)

Answer: threescore (or sixty years old)

According to the ninth verse, a widow is not to be "taken in", that is, taken under the church's watchful care, until she is at least 60 years old. Even then, he specifies that she must have been the wife of one man.
In verse 10, he adds a few more stipulations: she must be "Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saint's feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work." (KJV)
6. What kind of spirit does Paul tell Timothy that Christians are not called to be subjected to, according to 2 Timothy 1:7? (King James Version)

Answer: fear

In this passage, Paul says that a spirit of power, a spirit of love and a spirit of a sound mind is what believers in Christ are given by God, not a spirit of fear. (KJV)
7. Paul makes an interesting observation about his status as a prisoner in 2 Timothy 2:9. He tells Timothy that he (Paul) suffers trouble because of something that he had done previously. In the King James Version, what does Paul say is the reason for his suffering?

Answer: he had been an evil doer

Paul seems to be referencing his own life prior to becoming converted on the road to Damascus, where he had encountered Jesus after Jesus' resurrection. Paul was a zealous persecutor of the church until that time, because of his Jewish upbringing and his status as a lawyer mentored by a man named Gamaliel in the Jewish Sanhedrin.

Paul had been convinced in his own mind, that Christians were wrong, and thus had avidly tried to help put a stop to their doctrines and even to their existence.

After his conversion, he became just as zealous FOR Christ as he had previously been AGAINST Him. (Paul was not a half-way kind of guy.)
8. Have you ever known anyone who seemed to be their own worst enemy? Apparently Paul did too, because he tells Timothy to do something for those people so that they may receive God's grace. This is found in 2 Timothy 2:25-26. What does Paul tell Timothy to do in order to help them? (King James Version)

Answer: instruct them

Paul says that these people "oppose themselves" and God may allow them to repent if they acknowledge His truth. In the 26th verse, we see an interesting turn of phrase, "that they may recover THEMSELVES out of the snare of the devil..."

The author seems to be saying that since these people have voluntarily given themselves over to the will of the devil, with God's help, they can in turn rescue themselves from their own evil intents. While man cannot redeem himself nor help himself in any way, these folks after all, are their own worst enemy. Having placed themselves in jeopardy, they may release themselves from that form of bondage to the devil, with God's assistance. God's authority, Paul says, is all that is needed to do so, and if they repent (or turn away from the devil) while acknowledging God, He will give them the help they need to stay clear of these entrapments.
9. In chapter 3 of 2 Timothy, who does Paul say will get worse and worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves in verse 13? (King James Version)

Answer: evil men and seducers

The first eight verses of this chapter read like a horror story, with all sorts of evil acts being mentioned. By the 12th verse, we are informed that those who live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted and in the next verse we are warned of those who are ungodly. (KJV)
10. According to 2 Timothy 4:1-5, what does Paul tell Timothy that people will do concerning their ears after a time? (King James Version)

Answer: turn them from the truth

In both verses 3 and 4 in this passage, Paul says that there will come a time when people will not "endure sound doctrine," and that they will "turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned to fables."

This is the sign of what is known as "apostasy", of people turning away from God, instead of toward Him and His healing power. In this passage, Paul implies that men will no longer even acknowledge that there IS a God; nor will they be able to hear any of His truth because of their own unbelief. (KJV)
