Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original name of Esther

Answer: What is Hadassah?

Esther, the queen of Persia, was originally known as Hadassah, as per Esther 2:7. The verse states Hadassah was an orphan and she was raised by her cousin Mordecai. No details are given about how Haddassah's two parents died.
2. An obese king who was fatally stabbed in the stomach by Ehud, a judge of Israel

Answer: Who is Eglon?

Eglon, described as the "very fat" king of Moab, as per Judges 3:17 in the NKJV, was killed by Ehud, a left-handed judge of Israel. Scripture tells of Ehud meeting privately with Eglon and then taking his left hand to draw a dagger from his right thigh. Judges 3:21-22 states Ehud thrust the dagger into Eglon's stomach and "the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out." Scripture goes on to tell of Ehud secretly leaving and Eglon's assistants not discovering his body until some time later.
3. A son of Jacob and a founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel

Answer: Who is Naphtali?

Naphtali was the son of Jacob and Bilhah, the handmaiden of Rachel. Jacob, while on his deathbed, described Naphtali as "a deer let loose" and one who uses "beautiful words", as per Genesis 49:21 in the NKJV.

According to Genesis 46:24, Naphtali had four sons: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
4. The full brother of Benjamin

Answer: Who is Joseph?

Joseph was a full brother of Benjamin. These two sons of Jacob had Rachel as their mother. Joseph and Benjamin had ten other half brothers as well. The half brothers were the result of unions between Jacob and his second wife Leah and his two concubines, Zilpah and Bilhah.
5. A talented player of the harp

Answer: Who is David?

In addition to being a ferocious warrior, David was a talented harpist. In fact, when David was a teenager, he was called upon to play the harp for King Saul, as per 1 Samuel 16. Whenever Paul was beset by a distressing spirit, David would be called upon to play the harp for the man who was the first king of Israel. According to 1 Samuel 16:23 in the NKJV, whenever David played the harp, the "distressing spirit" would leave Saul and he would become "refreshed".
6. The husband of Hannah and the father of Samuel, as per 1 Samuel 1:1

Answer: Who is Elkaneh?

Elkaneh was the husband of Hannah and the father of Samuel, a noted judge of Israel. In addition to being married to Hannah, Elkaneh was married to Peninnah. Elkanah was apparently a devout man as 1 Samuel 1:3 in the NKJV tells of him going annually to "worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh."
7. The great grandfather of Saul, the first king of Israel, as per 1 Samuel 9:1

Answer: Who is Zeror?

The correct answer is Zeror, the son of Bechorath, as per 1 Samuel 9:1. According to the verse, Zeror was the great grandfather of Saul, the first king of Israel, as well as the great grandfather of Abner, commander of Saul's army. Because Zeror is mentioned in passing reference, not much is known about him.

1 Samuel 9:21 gives an indication as to why Zeror might not be well known. According to the verse, Saul claimed his family was the least of "all the families of the tribe of Benjamin."
8. The father of Shechem, the man who raped Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, as per Genesis 34:2

Answer: Who is Hamor?

Genesis 34:1-31 tells of Shechem, the son of Hamor, defiling Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah. According to Genesis 34:2 in the NKJV, Hamor was a Hivite and "prince of the country".
9. In order of appearance, the ninth book in the Old Testament of the KJV

Answer: What is 1 Samuel?

Using Bible versions such as the KJV, NKJV and the NIV, 1 Samuel, in the order of appearance, is the ninth book of the Old Testament. It follows Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges and Ruth.

Jewish tradition holds 1 Samuel, as well as 2 Samuel, was written by Samuel with some contributions from Gad and Nathan.
10. Two Old Testament books in the KJV named after women

Answer: What are Ruth and Esther?

Ruth and Esther are the only two Old Testament books named after women. Ruth was a Moabite woman who ended up marrying Boaz and became the great grandmother of David. Meanwhile, Esther was the young Jewish woman who became queen of Persia and was instrumental in preventing Haman from carrying out a scheme to kill all the Jews.
