Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I Timothy was an epistle written by the Apostle Paul to a young minister named Timothy. What does Paul call Timothy in the greeting of this epistle?

Answer: "my true son in the faith"

Paul addresses Timothy as his son in the faith. Timothy's family had been a help to Paul during his journeys and sometimes hard circumstances. Timothy followed Paul and was instructed by his teachings.

"Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord." (I Timothy 1:1-3, NIV)
2. Paul instructs Timothy that the law is good if a person uses it properly. According to the 1 Timothy 1:9-11 (NIV), who is the law for?

Answer: the ungodly

The law was not for the ones that were perfect, but was for the instruction and guiding of the ungodly.

"We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers-and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me." (I Timothy 1:8-11, NIV)
3. Jesus Christ came to save sinners, and Paul viewed himself as the worst. For what reason does Paul write he was shown mercy by God in I Timothy 1:16 (NIV)?

Answer: for others to believe and receive eternal life

The Apostle Paul retells his testimony to Timothy of how God showed mercy to him when he was once a persecutor and a blasphemer that acted out of ignorance. Paul had thrown many Christians in jail and watched their executions, believing he was doing the will of God. God changed him though when He knocked him off his donkey and revealed who He was. Paul became a changed man and a preacher of the gospel he had once hated.

In his words, Paul told Timothy, "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen." (I Timothy 1:15-17, NIV)
4. Timothy is charged to hold fast to his faith, because some had left and let their faith be shipwrecked. In I Timothy 1:20 (NIV), who were two people Paul told Timothy, that had left the faith and blasphemed?

Answer: Hymenaeus and Alexander

Hymenaeus and Alexandar had blasphemed and left the faith.

Paul encouraged Timothy to hold fast to the things that had been prophesied and his faith. Paul saw that Timothy had potential to do a good work for God, but many others had been shipwrecked in their faith and had quit.

"Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme." (I Timothy 1:18-20, NIV)
5. Petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving should be made for all people. In I Timothy 2:1-2 (NIV), who should be prayed for so we can live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness?

Answer: kings and those in authority

The Apostle Paul instructed, "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." (I Timothy 2:1-4, NIV)

Paul recognized that leaders in government need prayers in their decisions and lives because they can lead peace or cause destruction. In Paul's day many of the government leaders encouraged war and persecution of the Christian church. Many of the first Christians met in secret and were not able to practice their faith openly. Those that did paid a very dear price with their bodies and their lives.
6. In I Timothy, believers everywhere are encouraged to pray. According to I Timothy 2:8, how should good men pray and lift up holy hands?

Answer: without anger or dispute

"Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing." (I Timothy 2:8, NIV)

Paul had reminded Timothy that Jesus gave his life for all people. (I Timothy 2:5, NIV) Anger, bitterness, and dispute caused hurt instead of good things Christians were supposed to be able to share with one another and others.
7. Choosing church leaders was a very important task! Which one of these was NOT a characteristic or requirement of an overseer or church deacon, as listed in 1 Timothy 3 (NIV)?

Answer: They could be easily persuaded by others.

"Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect.(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap."(I Timothy 3:1-7, NIV)

A deacon or overseer had to prove himself to be worthy of the office by his own examples of Christian living. They could not be someone that was easily moved in their faith, standards, or morals.
8. Timothy was instructed to let no man discourage him because of his young age. What did Paul instruct him to do?

Answer: "Do not neglect your gift."

After Paul had given Timothy instruction on how to delegate things in the church, he encouraged Timothy by saying, "Command and teach these things. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you." (I Timothy 4:11-14, NIV)
9. Many things in life are uncertain or of temporary value. According to I Timothy 6:17 (NIV), what should hope be placed in?

Answer: in God

"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life." (I Timothy 6:17-19, NIV)
10. According to his final message in I Timothy 6 (NIV), how long did Paul instruct Timothy to keep the instructions and commandments in God's Word?

Answer: until the return of Jesus Christ

Paul charged Timothy and fellow believers to keep the commandments of God until the reappearance and second coming of Jesus Christ.

"In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time-God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen" (I Timothy 6:13-16, NIV)
