Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With what words does the Gospel according to John start?

Answer: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the word was God.

The other three are the beginnings of the gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The Word is meant to signify Jesus. Further into Chapter 1 more references and comparisons like this are made.
2. In John 3, Jesus explains to this man, who happens to be a Jewish leader, that the only way to enter into heaven is to be born again.

Answer: Nicodemus

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a Jewish leader of Israel. As the story goes, one day he approached Jesus and asked him, "Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him" (John 3:2). By addressing him as rabbi, Nicodemus shows his respect for Jesus. Jesus responds by telling him that to enter heaven he must be born again.

But Jesus doesn't mean it literally as Nicodemus interprets it. Jesus means that we must have a spiritual rebirth to enter heaven.
3. In John 5, Jesus heals a man. However, there is something about the circumstances of this healing which upsets the Pharisees. What is this?

Answer: Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath

The story goes like this: One day, Jesus was walking at a pool called Bethesda. There, many sick people waited for the waters to stir, for the first person in the stirred water would be healed. Jesus came across a sick man whom he healed. However, it also happened to be the Sabbath.

When the Pharisees found out, they approached Jesus who responded by telling them that as long as His Father is working, He is working.
4. In John 8, after saving the adulterous woman, Jesus speaks to the Pharisees saying, "I am the ______ of the world"

Answer: Light

After Jesus said this to the Pharisees and Jews, they told Him that his testimony wasn't true, with which He responded saying that His testimony was in fact true because he knew where He had come from and where He was going (and the Jews did not). This clever sparring of words continued for a while in which we learn that Jesus is going somewhere where they can't follow.

This conversation can be read in John 8: 12-59.
5. In John 11, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead using these words.

Answer: "Lazarus, come forth"

Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha, whom were good friends of Jesus and lived in Bethany. When Jesus found out that Lazarus was sick, he decided to stay in Judea two days longer before going to Bethany. When he arrived and learned of Lazarus' death he asked to go see the tomb to which He spoke.

Then Lazarus came out of the tomb wrapped from head to toe. You can read this story in John 11:1-45.
6. In John 13, Jesus is at the Last Supper with His disciples. How did Jesus show which man would betray Him?

Answer: by dipping a morsel to give to that man

Jesus had known that Judas Iscariot would betray Him and He told His disciples that very night that one of them would betray Him. When asked whom it was, Jesus responded by saying that He would dip a morsel to give to that man. Then He broke off a piece of food and handed it to Judas Iscariot telling Judas to go do what he had to do quickly.
7. In John 15:5 (KJV), Jesus preaches to his disciples, and tells them, "I am the vine, you are the _____".

Answer: branches

Jesus tells his followers that He is the vine, they are the branches and that His Father is the vinedresser. His Father takes away the unfruitful branches but lets the fruit bearing ones stay. Jesus also tells them that the only way that a branch can give fruit is if it abides in the vine; they must abide in Him. Jesus also gives His commandment in this chapter which is, "... that ye love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12).
8. In John 18, Jesus is betrayed by Judas, and brought to Annas, Caiaphas, and finally Pilate. What is Pontius Pilate's initial reaction to Jesus?

Answer: Pilate tells the Jews to judge Jesus according to their own law

To that, the Jews respond saying that they do not have the right to condemn someone to death. When Pilate asks Jesus whether or not He is the King of the Jews, Jesus answers by saying that his kingdom is not of this world (meaning that His kingdom is the kingdom of God).

At the end of the questioning, Pilate has found Jesus quite innocent but this doesn't satisfy the Jews so Pilate orders Jesus scourged and eventually crucified.
9. In John 20, Mary Magdalene goes to visit the tomb of Jesus but finds that it is empty. She is then approached by a man whom she thinks to be a gardener but, when she realizes that He is Jesus, she calls out to Him, "Rabboni" which means

Answer: Teacher

Rabboni is a Jewish term for master or teacher and that is how Mary Magdalene addresses Jesus. At first she doesn't recognize Him, but when He says her name, she does. Mary Magdalene is the first person to see Jesus after His resurrection. Jesus then tells her to go and tell His disciples that He is risen. Jubilant, she goes to spread the good news.
10. What does the last line of the Book of John tell us?

Answer: if everything Jesus did was written down, there wouldn't be room for all the books

Although all four of these statements can be considered true, the book of John ends with the line "And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that the world itself would not contain the books that would be written" John 21:25.

This tells us that Jesus did innumerable things and that only a fraction were recorded. Those things, however will be remembered forever.
