Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the first chapter of Proverbs, what was the beginning of knowledge?

Answer: The fear of the Lord

In the beginning of Proverbs, Solomon is introduced as the author and the reasons for the book is explained. The introduction is concluded with these wise words: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7)
2. Listen to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. According to Proverbs, what will a parent's instruction be like?

Answer: a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck

Solomon tells his followers, "Listen, my son, to your father's instruction
and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck." (Proverbs 1:8-9) He emphasizes that a person who honors their parents and listens to their instruction will have wisdom and honor themselves.
3. Wisdom cries in the public square to the mockers and the fools. What does she urge them to do at her rebuke?

Answer: Repent

Wisdom reaches out to the fools and the mockers by giving them a chance to change their ways.

"How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery, and fools hate knowledge? Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings." Proverbs 1:20-23

However the fools and the mockers choose not to listen. Wisdom gives them a warning that she will laugh when disaster and distress strike them.
4. Wisdom can be found in the simplest of places. Which insect does Proverbs praise for its work?

Answer: the ant

Proverbs tells the fool to go to the ant to observe its ways to gain wisdom. The ant works year round to prepare for its future.

"Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest." (Proverbs 6:6-8)
5. According to Proverbs it's not wise to wear yourself out getting rich or to trust in your own cleverness. What does Proverbs 23 say riches will do at a glance?

Answer: They will sprout wings and fly off like an eagle.

"Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle." (Proverbs 23:4-5)

Proverbs emphasizes that riches are temporary and do not last forever. Like an eagle they fly away quickly. However Proverbs 14:23 also assures, "All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty."
6. Proverbs describes a few characters. The poor sluggard is a person with no common sense. Which of these does Proverbs NOT use to describe him?

Answer: He rests only when he is really sick.

"A sluggard says, 'There's a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!' As a door turns on its hinges ,so a sluggard turns on his bed.
A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes, than seven people who answer discreetly."
(Proverbs 26:13-16)
7. The mocker is a proud and arrogant person. How does Proverbs 21 say he behaves?

Answer: with insolent fury

"The proud and arrogant person--"Mocker" is his name-- behaves with insolent fury." Proverbs 21:24

The mocker is not a person that would be pleasant to meet. He is rude, inconsiderate, and believes he knows it all. He loves to be offended and takes pleasure in offending other people. According to Proverbs 29:8, "Mockers stir up a city, but the wise turn away anger."

However like all the characters in Proverbs, Mocker has his reward. Proverbs 16:18 says, "Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall".
8. Although the fool is constantly on a path to destruction, being wise has its rewards. According to Proverbs 10, what are the wages of the righteous?

Answer: life

"The wages of the righteous is life, but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death." (Proverbs 10:16)

The fool, the mocker, and the wicked, are always in trouble and causing others to fall with them. They earn their life means by being deceptive and dishonest. Whatever they do comes to ruin or death. Proverbs 11:18 states, "A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward."
9. Proverbs instructs men repeatedly to choose women wisely. According to Proverbs 27, what is a quarrelsome wife like?

Answer: a dripping leak

"A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand" (Proverbs 27:15-16)

I haven't known too many people that enjoyed being in a leaky house during a rainstorm. Not only is it uncomfortable but many people that live in a house that is continually wet get sick. Likewise, grabbing something oily is hard to hold and wind is uncontrollable. It doesn't sound like a love match made in heaven.
10. In the last words of Proverbs, the book speaks of a lady with noble character that is worth far more than rubies. Which of these words does Proverbs 31 NOT use to describe a virtuous wife?

Answer: She has a body like ivory and lips like honey.

"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." (Proverbs 31:1)

Proverbs elaborates that a virtuous wife brings honor to her husband and her family. She is a good business woman who sells at the city gates. She provides for her family in times of hard weather and wakes up early to feed her family. She is not idle and is clothed with strength and dignity.

The lady described is not praised for her charm or beauty. The chapter concludes with these words:
"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." (Proverbs 31:30-31)
