Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Isaac's twin sons were as different as different could be. It didn't help that Isaac favored Esau and Rebekah favored Jacob. What did Jacob steal from Esau?

Answer: Both of these

Genesis 25:29-33 - "Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. He said to Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I'm famished!" (That is why he was also called Edom.) Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright." "Look, I am about to die," Esau said. "What good is the birthright to me?" But Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob."

Genesis 27:22,23 - "Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau." He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him."

After Jacob deceived Isaac for Esau's blessing, Esau was ready to kill Jacob. It was many years before they were reconciled (in Genesis 33).
2. When Benjamin, the youngest of Jacob's children, was born, his mother Rachel died during the birth. Before Jacob changed his name to Benjamin, what name had Rachel given him that meant "son of my sorrow"?

Answer: Ben-oni

Genesis 35:18 - "As she breathed her last--for she was dying--she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin."

Jacob and his household had traveled to Bethel, where God had encountered him as he had fled from his brother Esau. While there, the Lord renamed Jacob Israel. It was afterwards, while the household was traveling from Bethel to Ephrath, that Rachel died in childbirth.
3. "What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?" To whom were these words spoken?

Answer: Balaam son of Beor

The story of Balaam and his donkey can be found in Numbers 22:21-41. Here is the conversation in full:

Numbers 22:28-30 - "Then the LORD opened the donkey's mouth, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?" Balaam answered the donkey, "You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now." The donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?" "No," he said."
4. After King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Judah, he took some young men of noble birth to serve in his palace. Their names were Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah and Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar's chief official assigned them new Babylonian names: Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego and... what did he name Daniel?

Answer: Belteshazzar

Daniel 1:6,7 - "Among these were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego."

Daniel remained true to the God of Israel through his captivity in Babylon. His ability to interpret dreams secured him a position of power under Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel 2:48 states "Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men."

Daniel also had many prophetic dreams himself, many of which are believed to be of the end times when Jesus Christ will return.
5. Nahum utters a prophecy against Nineveh in the book bearing his name. What word is missing from this description? "Woe to the city of _____, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!" (Nahum 3:1)

Answer: blood

The chapter titles given in the NIV tell the tale quite well: Chapter 1 - The Lord's Anger Against Nineveh; Chapter 2 - Nineveh to Fall; Chapter 3 - Woe to Nineveh.

Nineveh was eventually captured by the Medes and Chaldeans, circa 625 BC.

Nahum is the seventh in the order of the minor prophets in the latter half of the Old Testament.
6. What city was the home of Ruth and of David, was fortified by Rehoboam, and once carried the name 'Ephrath'?

Answer: Bethlehem

Ruth 1:22 - "So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning."

1 Samuel 17:12 - "Now David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse, who was from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul's time he was old and well advanced in years."

2 Chronicles 11:5-10 - "Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built up towns for defense in Judah: Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, Beth Zur, Soco, Adullam, Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, Zorah, Aijalon and Hebron. These were fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin."

Of course, it is most famous for being the birthplace of Jesus as described in Matthew 2:1,2 - "After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.""
7. What criminal, whose crime was committing murder during an insurrection, was chosen to be released from prison instead of Jesus?

Answer: Barabbas

Mark 15:7 - "A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising."

John 18:39-40 - ""But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?" They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion."

From that point, no further information is given as to the fate of Barabbas, but the recounting goes on to tell of Jesus' scourging and eventual crucifixion and resurrection.
8. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was stoned for what crime?

Answer: Blasphemy

Acts 6:9-11 - "Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)--Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.

Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, "We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.""
9. An apostle who traveled extensively with Paul, Barnabas received his name, meaning 'son of encouragement,' from the other apostles. What was his original name?

Answer: Joseph

Acts 4:36,37 - "Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet."

Barnabas stood up for a newly-converted Saul when others were still afraid of him (for the persecutions he had visited on the early church), and went on to travel on missionary trips with the newly-named Paul, and later Mark as well.
10. The book of Revelation describes the New Jerusalem in great detail, including jewel-encrusted foundations (12 of them). The eighth foundation was decorated with what type of jewel?

Answer: Beryl

Revelation 21:19,20 - "The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst."

And let's not forget the streets of gold and gates of pearl!
