Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jesus' statement in Mark 10:24 surprises his disciples when He says, "... how hard it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." What does Jesus say is an easier feat than a rich man entering the kingdom of heaven?

Answer: a camel going through the eye of a needle

"An elephant going through the eye of a needle" is used in the Babylonian Talmud as a phrase to suggest something impossible.
"A cable" or "rope" "going through the eye of a needle" are alternate readings in other translations - thinking that the word for "camel" should be translated as "cable" or a "rope."

The correct answer of "a camel going through the eye of a needle", in context, seems to surprise His disciples. A common thought of the day was that the rich were blessed by God, hence saved. Jesus changes their paradigm in this teaching.
2. Which one of the following is not present in Luke's account of Jesus' transfiguration (Luke 9:28-36)?

Answer: Andrew

In Luke 9:28-36, Jesus is transfigured in front of Peter, James, and John. In this miraculous appearance, Moses and Elijah have a conversation with Jesus while the disciples are sleeping. After awaking, Peter, impetuous as usual, says that a tabernacle should be erected for each of them. Peter is corrected by a voice from heaven when God, the Father, speaks and says that Jesus has the preeminence in verse 35.
3. In Matthew 19 Jesus is tested about divorce. Jesus says there is the one legitimate spiritual reason for a divorce between a husband and wife. What is it?

Answer: adultery

Again, Jesus' disciples are shocked with their Master's teaching. So shocked, in fact, that they proclaim, "it is better not to marry" (Matthew 19:10).

Jesus' teaching concerning divorce is a reiteration of the truth and principle given in His words "from the beginning" (Matthew 19:4).
4. In the New King James Version, Jesus makes an important claim and distinction concerning His followers to Pilate in John 18:36. He said, "My kingdom is not of this _________."

Answer: world

Jesus plainly states that His servants will not fight (physically) for His kingdom. This makes a clear distinction between Jesus' kingdom and political kingdoms and governments.
5. According to John 12, who are the chief priests taking counsel to kill because of Jesus?

Answer: Lazarus

Because Lazarus is raised from the dead in Bethany, just outside of Jerusalem, Jesus' opponents think their only option is to kill Him (John 11:49-50) and Lazarus (John 12:10). Someone who has been dead for four days, and then raised from the dead by Jesus, poses a serious threat to their authority in Jerusalem.
6. What prophet does Jesus say prophesied about the religious leaders of Jesus's day in Matthew 15:7-9?

Answer: Isaiah

In Jesus' running debates with the religious leaders of His time, they openly accuse Him of everything from blasphemy to being from Satan. In this particular section (Matthew 15:1-20), Jesus encounters a debate because His followers are not following the common traditions of the day. Jesus then counters with an accusation Himself: He asks, "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?" (Matthew 15:3).

In Matthew 15:7-9 Jesus references Isaiah and his prophecy about this particular issue -- placing man-made traditions above the clear teachings of God.
7. Which one of these notorious Old Testament names is not in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:1-16?

Answer: Ahab

These names are notorious in the Old Testament for the following reasons:

Although she is known for helping the spies from Joshua and Israel, Rahab is called a "harlot" in Joshua 2:1.

Manasseh rebuilt pagan idols (like Ahab), polluted the Temple with pagan altars, and practiced child sacrifice and other unlawful "spiritual" things (2 Kings 21:1-15).

Rehoboam, son of Solomon, listened to the young advisers and increased taxes that helped cause the division of the nation of Israel (1 Kings 12).

Ahab is a notorious name, but is not in the lineage of Jesus.
8. Jesus has unpleasant things to say at the end of His ministry concerning the scribes and Pharisees. Which of these modifiers is not used by Jesus in the New King James Version in Matthew 23?

Answer: ungodly

While the scribes and Pharisees, according to the New Testament, are not godly people in their treatment of Jesus, and later His church, Jesus does not use the term "ungodly" to define them.

According to Jesus in Matthew 23, the religion of Israel is taken captive by hypocrites. While Jesus teaches that the scribes and Pharisees address questions concerning the Law of Moses in a correct fashion (Matthew 23:3), He says that the example they set is horrible, calling them hypocrites, blind guides, serpents, and a brood of vipers.
9. According to the Gospel accounts, three of the following events occur as Jesus is being led to Calvary. Which one of the following scenes is not part of any of the Gospel accounts?

Answer: Veronica wiping the face of Jesus on a towel

The sections of the Gospels that tell of Jesus' trials, beating, and crucifixion are very intense. These sections are very important in coming to an understanding about Jesus' mission. Other stories, not mentioned in the Gospels, are the subject of this question. One of these is the non-Biblical story of Veronica wiping Jesus' face with a towel or veil.

Simon the Cyrenian is mentioned in Matthew 27:32, Mark 15:21, and Luke 23:26. Women following Him in lamentation and mourning are mentioned in Luke 23:27. Jesus warning the crowd on His way to Calvary is in Luke 23:28-31.
10. Before Jesus ascends back to heaven, He gives His followers directions for their future work (Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-18) in a passage commonly called the "Great Commission." What two specific things are common to these two passages?

Answer: teaching/preaching and baptism of believers

In both of the passages (Matthew 28 and Mark 16) Jesus instructs the Apostles that their job is to go and preach/teach the Good News of His death, burial, and resurrection to the world. Their teaching would include all of Jesus' instructions, which includes being baptized in name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
